Howell Rotary News - 3-21-11

 

The President of the Brain Injury Association of Michigan will be our guest speaker at Monday's meeting.   Sandie Cortez is our program chairperson.   

 

Last week Dr. Brent Knight, President of Lansing Community College, shared information about the college, its history and role our community, and some ideas about forward movement in secondary education.

Important Rotary International Update on Japan Earthquake / Tsunami Crisis:   In response to the massive earthquake and tsunami that struck Japan on March 11th. The Rotary Foundation established the Rotary Japan and Pacific Islands Disaster Recovery Fund, which will support recovery projects in the affected areas.

The number of people confirmed dead and missing rises daily and the nuclear crisis has added much additional challenges to an already catastrophic situation in Japan.  Rotarians, clubs, and districts can contribute cash and District Designated Fund (DDF) allocations to the fund. The Foundation will begin accepting online contributions by 14 March at www.rotary .org. or you can bring checks made out to the Rotary Foundation, earmarked for the Japan Disaster Recovery Fund, to any upcoming meeting.  Please give to Jeanne Clum and we'll make it happen. 

It's been suggested that the Howell Rotary Board consider a donation from the Club to support relief efforts.  This will be a discussion item at the March 28th board of directors meeting.

Bowl Meister Dan Murdock & the great team from the Howell Rotary Club did a tremendous job raising funds for Big Brothers Big Sisters mentorships at the BOWL FOR KIDS" this weekend.  We raised a total of $1,680, plus the Club's commitment of $500 made it $2,180.  Way to go, Team!  Brent Earl challenged DJ Mike Morano from WHMI that every time he mentioned a specific word on the PA, Brent would donate an additional $1, which led to quite a few hoots and hollers.  In the end, Brent ponied up for a great cause.  Those dollars were put into the 50/50 drawing - which Brent ended up winning and very generously donated back to BBBS - $350!!!  Awesome, Brent!  Thanks for such incredible support and for challenging Mike.

 

Don't Forget - Whether You're a Winer or Not:  Bring your friends, significant other, and anyone else you can think of, to the Howell Rotary's Wine Tasting on Wednesday, March 30th from 4:30-7 p.m. at the Howell Main Street Winery.  The cost is $15 per person with all proceeds designated to support youth literacy through the Howell Carnegie District Library and scholarships for youth through the Howell Parks and Recreation.  Join us!

 

A sign up sheet will be available at the meeting or you may contact Bruce McCullen(brucemccullen@sbcglobal.net) if you plan to bring an appetizer ro dessert to pass or donate some money to buy some appetizers or desserts.  Your dish would need to be at the Howell Winery before 4:30 on March 30th.
