Howell Rotary News - 1-31-11
Monday's program speaker is Michael Markel,
Chief Nursing Officer and Executive Director of Operations of St. Joseph Mercy Livingston Hospital.
Michael will share some of the hospital's accomplishments over the past several years, as well as give us an idea as to what the future might hold for our local hospital. Michael will also share information about the Stroke Robot and the life-saving results of having such technology available.
Hurrah and Congratulations
to some of our Howell Rotary Members! WOW - Congratulations to Kim Dane for being recognized as the 2010 Citizen of the Year! Kim is so very deserving and was quite surprised at Wednesday night's celebration. Kim's husband, Brian and son Nathan, were on hand for the recognition with Kim. Also, congratulations to Howell Rotarian Harry Griffith for being awarded a Life Membership to the Howell Area Chamber of Commerce! Another well deserved recognition. It's a real tribute to the Howell Rotary Club to look at the listing of recognized leaders over the past decades as so many of the past Citizens are (or were) active Howell Rotarians. This speaks volumes for our organization!
At last week's meeting
we celebrated the success of Tour de Livingston with many special guests attending. The room was almost filled to capacity with lots of energy and enthusiasm focused on the Tour and the tremendous benefit these funds make in our community. Many of our sponsors, members of the League of MI Bicyclists, County Commissioner Carol Griffith, MI State Legislator Bill Rogers and United Way joined us. Congratulations to the Howell Rotary Club for another tremendous Tour!
Walk for Warmth
takes place on Sat., Feb. 12th from 9-noon. Kathleen Zaenger is recruiting walkers for the Howell Rotary team. If you're not able to walk, think about supporting a club member who is. All proceeds assist local heating emergency needs through O.L.H.S.A.
P.E.T.S. (Presidential Elect Training Session)
takes place March 10-12 in Kalamazoo. This is a great leadership training opportunity for our club. We are looking for member(s) of our club to attend to participate and bring back key information for the upcoming year. (President Elect Steve Manor and President Nominee Sam Vasiu are not able to attend; if you have interest in representing the Howell Rotary Club, please see Jeanne Clum.)

Program Calendar:
Steve Manor and Jeanne Clum are working to solidify the program calendar through June. Steve shared a "wish list" of speaker ideas that came from our membership. If you have a connection with any of the individual on the list, please let Steve know that you'll pursue that particular presenter.
In-bound Exchange Student:
Thanks to Sandie and Don Cortez (and their daughters) for inquiring about being a host family for an in-bound exchange student this next school year. They're excited about the opportunity to share their home with a young person from a different culture. The Board of Directors has reviewed funding for hosting an in-bound student and found that we are able to include the fees necessary in this year's and the next fiscal year. We look forward to hearing more from Sandie as the selection process moves forward.
Out-bound Exchange Student:
Ganiah Hinton will be leaving in August to live and go to school in Argentina for a year. She's very excited.and very busy doing lots of fundraising for this incredible experience. We'll make sure to have Ganiah join us at a meeting prior to her leaving.
Howell Interact Club is accepting cans and bottles
to return as a fundraiser for the Klein family who lost their husband and father in an explosion in November. Connect with Sandie Cortez or Patti Griffith about returnables, or bring yours to Monday's meeting.
