Today, January 15, 2007: Bill Earl, who always has interesting programs, will discuss "Pheasants Forever," one of the many organizations that he belongs to. 

Today we will induct two new members into the club;
Rick Sigler sponsored by Carol Griffith and Dan Murdock sponsored by Pat Convery. Way to go Carol and Pat! Now that we are past the holidays, the membership committee wants you to remember to invite potential members. Contact Kim Dane for details. 

Take time to look at the video that Jim Gilligan put together.  Jim has reviewed many activities that our Club did during the past year.  It is well done.  Thanks to Jim!

Today is also Martin Luther King Day, in memory of the great Civil Rights leader.  Rev. King preached passive resistance, like Gandhi and Thoreau, to touch the conscience and the sense of right in United States citizens. 

Today the Rotary Board meets at 1 p.m. after lunch (which is not likely to be pheasant!).

Next Week: Mike Hall, our intrepid Sergeant of Arms, is program chairman. 

The Steering Committee will meet on Thursday, January 25, at Cleary's.

 

Is Howell Rotary Up For This Challenge?:

Dear Most Esteemed Rotary Presidents of Howell, Brighton, Livingston Sunrise and Fowlerville,

This event is coming up March 9,10 and 11 at Striking Lanes in Hartland.

As you all know, this is THE major fundraiser for the year for BB/BS and economic times being what they are, a very important year for the organization.

In the past, the Howell, Brighton and Sunrise clubs have fielded a number of teams and raised a good amount of money. Fowlerville has participated on occasion as well.

I would like to issue a Rotary Challenge which includes a little contest of both bowling and fundraising skills.

Each dollar raised from Bowling pledges will count for 1 point.

Each pin count will count for ½ point.

No more than 5 teams allowed per club. (I think 3 teams is the most any of the clubs has entered in the past)

The club which amasses the most points will enjoy the following benefits:

  1. Bragging Rights (maybe even a cheesy traveling trophy?)
  2. Each of the losing clubs will write an additional check to BB/BS for $100 in the name of the winning club.

The great thing is there are no losers as BB/BS wins all round!

Let me know if you are interested in participating and I'll coordinate the scorekeeping.

Commentary

Gerald R. Ford.  The eulogists at President Ford's funeral services revealed much about the man: that he made the right decision in pardoning Mr. Nixon; that he made many long-standing foreign policy decisions; that he was - first and foremost - a man of integrity and decency; that he was a superb athlete, not the bumbler that he was often portrayed; that he consulted people of both parties in his decision-making; and that so many of his peers really liked him.  This was 30 years after he left office.  Underestimated?  So many people think that he was.

Howell Theater: My wife and I went to the Howell Theater last week and sat in an almost empty theater to watch the movie.  It is a pleasant place that shows first-run movies (just like the mega-theater in Brighton except only two at a time).  It is worth our while to have this theater in Howell, so support it if you can.  There are good movies, popcorn, and ample parking.
