The Howell Rotary Club will meet on Monday, August 15th at noon in the Community Room of the St. Joseph Mercy Livingston Hospital.
Howell Education Foundation will be our program on Monday. Hear all about the creative and innovative partnership that enabled a house to renovated by young people in the skilled trades classes at Howell High School, and other county schools. Don Cortez, chairperson of the Foundation, will be our guest speaker.
Congratulations to Erica Karfonta and family Violet Grace Karfonta; born 7-25-11; 7.9 lbs Hope all is well. We're doing great. No sleep, but enjoying all the little sweet things in life.
We have a request for book donations for the day they give out backpacks to low income families on August 18th. Please bring any children’s books you would like to share to Mondays meeting and then Sandie will deliver what we collect. We would like to donate as many books as we can this is one of the things Rotary Supports, thank you.
And, if you haven’t already signed up to work the Day of Caring and/or the Melon Festival Ice Cream sales, please expect to have your arm twisted – just joking (I think). Remember, back in the Civil War, when people were drafted they could hire substitutes to go in their stead!
The Howell Rotary Club enjoyed a wonderful picnic at the Howell City Park last Monday. Located on a hill overlooking the beautiful Thompson Lake, the City of Howell is fortunate to have the large pravillion that OUR CLUB built and donated to the City many years ago. Member and Club Historian Duane Zemper first learned to use a power nailer while helping build the pravillion. Duane said that he had to nail rafters to a steel beam.
Our guest speaker last Monday was Nathan Voght, director of Howell’s Downtown Development Authority. As you know, the DDA is now the organizer of the Howell Melon Festival. He described all the activities that are occurring – starting with the Melon Ball on Thursday August 18th and ending with cleanup on Sunday evening.
Thanks to Dave Bagwell and Jeff Hansen for cooking the ‘dogs’. And thanks to Clyde Riley for recommending Ball Park Franks – reflecting Clyde’s 20 years as President of that company. Loyalty never dies!
The Club is again selling Melon Ice Cream on the Courthouse lawn and we’ve added the Opera House as a venue this year. We seriously need your help for at least one shift. Contact Patti or Sandie to pick a shift.

Mark your calendars for October 9th! The Tour de Livingston committee met this past week and there’s so much to share with everyone. It will be our most incredible event thus far. Lots of energy to make it all happen – we need your help. Everyone in the club should be able to help out in one way or another – from route support drivers to lunch ticket takers.
