Rotary Action Group for Diabetes

During this meeting, we are honored to have our fellow Rotarian Edwin A. Velarde speak to us about the Rotary Action Group for Diabetes and his personal commitment to it.

Globally, more than 463 million people are living with diabetes while nearly half don’t even know.  That is 1 in 11 persons suffering from diabetes.  3.8 million deaths are caused by diabetes and high blood glucose. Rotary Action Group for Diabetes aims to address the Global Diabetes Epidemic by raising awareness to the humanitarian hearts and minds of 1.2 million members of Rotary International and other individuals and organizations who would like to join our efforts in our Areas of Focus. 

Suffering from type-1 diabetes for 3 decades, Velarde developed a new nutrition program and with cycling has turned his condition around. Velarde now dedicates his newfound energy to raising awareness about the Global Diabetes Epidemic. During more recent Rotary International Conventions, Velarde rode his bicycle and founded EPiC Journey Against Diabetes, an advocacy to raise awareness about diabetes, its perils, and the Global Diabetes Epidemic in the Rotary World and beyond.
