Steven Ahles is a board member of the Rotary Action Group -"Addiction Prevention in North America". He is a member of the Rotary Club of  Southgate, Michigan and is a retired attorney and Fire Chief. He will speak about Project SMART, a program that helps to get rid of excess drugs in homes.

The project provides residents with disposal bottles that contain activated charcoal. When a person chooses to put their excess drugs in it, they are instantly destroyed and rendered unusable thus eliminating the security issue and reducing the buildup in our water supply.

The good news is the program is fully paid for by PHRMA, the trade association group of the pharmaceutical companies under the requirements of a court settlement. In addition to this program being paid for, PHRMA also has to pay for Naloxone training and distribution to counter the effects of drug overdoses and public education programs all of which Rotary clubs can provide to the community at no cost.
