Program:

Program Host Mark Marker introduced Captain Greg Mowbray of the Brighton Area Fire Authority (BFA) who shared the story of the Brighton 911 Memorial.  Captain Mowbray joined the Brighton Fire Authority in 1997 and assists in responding to the roughly 1500 calls received each year, along with the other five full time employees and several part time dedicated heroes.  In late 2009, Captain Mowbray and former Brighton Rotarian/current South Lyon Fire Chief Mike Kennedy learned that 1100 pieces of World Trade Center (WTC) steel would be released by the NY Port Authority for community memorial purposes. They immediately prepared a proposal, gained the approval of Chief Larry Lane, and submitted an application to receive a piece of WTC steel in September, 2009.  In November, the BFA received an acceptance of the application to construct a memorial in the front green space of the W. Grand River main fire station.  In March, 2011, the BFA was notified of the pick-up date for their piece of WTC steel.

On April 27, 2011, a volunteer team of six firefighters travelled to Manhattan, and, in full dress uniform, accepted the steel piece.  While waiting for the ceremony, the volunteers learned that the Museum Curator of the NY Fire Authority is an Ann Arbor native and University of Michigan graduate, who designated a select piece of steel for our community as soon as she viewed the application. The Firefighters Association covered all expenses of the trip, and the Corrigan family (Thank you Bonnie, Bernie, Mike & your family) has been tremendous to make certain that this memorial became part of our community.  The volunteers treated the twisted piece of steel they received with as much respect as if it was a newborn baby.

When Piet Lindhout arrived at the BFA to view the steel, he found its presence to be so moving and thought-provoking, compelling him to get on his hands-and-knees to view it from all sides that he immediately thought of suspending the steel in the air to allow 360-degree views of its construction.  Jason McIntyre of Lindhout Associates assisted in the design that results in the steel suspension over pieces of rubble, with light projecting from the ground to illuminate its strength and vulnerability.  Approximately 2500-3000 people attended the dedication on 9/11/2011, and the outpouring of support from suppliers, especially Unilock that provided all brick paving labor and materials, has been wonderful.  The memorial still has design elements to be added, including:  a Granite Wall containing the phrase “We Shall Never Forget;” a Listing of the 407 First Responders’ names who relinquished their lives to save 10,000 others; relocation and addition of flag poles; an Identification Tablet about the dedication day; and Story Boards of the timeline of events on September 11, 2001.
