PROGRAM/CLUB ASSEMBLY: Brian Donovan invited his brother, Mike Donovan, to be today’s speaker.

GUESTS:     Undersheriff Mike Murphy (Sunrise Rotary Club), Evan Nelson (a representative of DECA), Mike Donovan, Keith Krings (Ann Arbor North Rotary), and Michael Griffith and K. C. Perlberg.

TWO TRUTHS & A LIE:  Kim Coates and Rich Millis presented this week.
Kim Coates
1.  She was waiting in line at a bank one day and she was pushed out of line. She shoved back and then turned and saw a man with a ski mask and vest, and holding a gun.  He was with another similarly dressed man. The man that had shoved Kim instructed everyone in the bank on what not to do. Then a gun fired.  The bullet passed across the room, where the loan officer fell to the ground. The next thing she knew the bank robbers were running out of the bank.

2. Kim was home one day when the phone rang. The man on the other end wanted to talk to her and was calling collect from the Livingston County Jail.  She got scared and handed the phone to her then husband. The inmate didn’t want to talk to him and hung up.  She called the Livingston County Jail back, and found out the inmate that called her was the infamous serial killer known to residents of the County.

3. Kim has a keen sense of intuition that brings her dreams and feelings about others.  She has lived with this ability her whole life and when she gets these thoughts she shares them with the people involved.

The lie was # 1.  The bullet did not kill the loan officer, he just fainted.  Rich guessed statement #1 was partially a lie.

Rich Millis  - He shared stories (and one lie) regarding his athletic abilities and glory days
  1. When Rich was in senior in high school he hurt his hand while playing a sport.  He came to the sidelines where the coach spit on his hand and told him to get back in the game.  It wasn’t until he broke the other hand some time later that he had the first hand x-rayed and found out it had been broken.  Because it healed improperly they had to re-break the first hand fracture and then set both hand fractures.  So he was in two hand casts at the same time.

  1. Rich was born and raised in California where he did a lot of surfing.  It was common for him to surf 2-3 times/week.  While surfing one day he suffered a broken ankle, which ended his beach boy days.

3. When Rich was a senior in college he was on the track team and was a javelin thrower.  He was such a good javelin thrower that he qualified to compete for the Olympic trials.

The lie was #3. He never competed in the Olympic trials, but his father did compete in Olympic trials in 1960.

Next week, Dirk Dewinkle and LuAnn  Loy will present.

PROGRAM:  Mike Donovan is a 25 year employee of the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, Wildlife Division.  The DNR is entrusted with keeping Michigan’s 4 million acres of forests and wildlife intact and sustainable for generations to come.  How does the public know if the DNR is doing a good job in ensuring that our wildlife and forests are sustainable?  One way is to know about the “Sustainable Forestry Initiatives” and “FSC”  which are certification programs that Michigan and other States are evaluated by.

FSC is an international certification program for the timber industry. In order to obtain and maintain certification by the FSC, Michigan has to adhere to ten principles of forest management.  Michigan, Wisconsin and Minnesota have ~ 16.4 million acres of state owned forests.  These States are also certified by the Sustainable Forestry Initiative which is a North American program and certifies ground performance (are the grounds kept clean, such as not leaving waste by the timber industry).

To maintain these certifications, Michigan is audited every few years on whether they are meeting these certification performance measures. Every year the State of Michigan is also “checked in” on, which is not a full audit.  As an internal auditor, Mike’s job is to make  sure Michigan is in compliance with these certification measures.

Mike passed around some wood, magazines and other products so we could see these certification stickers from FSC and Sustainable Forestry Initiatives.  Stickers on products indicate that the companies that sell these products support sustainable and certification efforts.  We can also be supportive by purchasing products that support the FSC and Sustainable Forestry Initiatives.   For more information go to www.fsc.org and www.sfiprogram.org
