Piet Lindhout alerted the Club to the three typical phases of a Rotary project (especially our  “Easy” Fundraiser):  Step 1:  Ask for help and people jump to respond, Step 2:  Set a deadline and those who procrastinated, rush to meet the deadline; Step 3:  Final edit of placemat proof to check spelling and the remaining volunteers do not want to miss this opportunity, and will jump to respond.  Next week, we enter Step 3 of the “Easy” Fundraiser – don’t miss the fun to sponsor our Club and support good deeds in the community!

Program:

Program Host Mike McManus introduced Marc Zupmore, Senior Engineer and Project Manager for the DTE Energy Garden Project.   This project started in 2007 and was created in partnership with Gleaners to provide high value/nutritional food to low income people.  One hundred areas of buffer property was converted to community garden space and people raise what they need and give the surplus to Gleaners for distribution.  The first two gardens were located in Auburn Hills and Plymouth Township in 2007, and they generated 5,000 pounds of food.  The second year, six more gardens were added.  By the third year, four acres, and ten gardens were in production. This past year, the goal has been to increase yield without expanding the acreage needed.  The overall view of the project is that people are involved for learning and the long haul—it doesn’t matter if they harvest a bushel or tons.  The first volunteers were a group of special needs students who made vegetable soup from the harvest and greatly benefited from the educational experience they received.
