Longtime Rotarian Joe Mike celebrated his 97th birthday this summer and continues to do well at Medilodge.

Bill Metz reminded members about the "Teaming up for VINA:  Spartans vs. Wolverines" benefit for the community dental center on Thursday, October 7th from 6:45-9:00pm at Cleary University. A $25 donation will give you access to hear Brighton's own Dave LewAllen from Channel 7 News perform Master of Ceremonies duties.

The Brighton High School Varsity Football Team presented the Rotary Jug after their hard-earned victory over Milford on Friday.  This week, the homecoming game will feature Brighton versus Hartland to battle for a first place tie in the KLAA division.

The Third Annual Doris Longfellow Blood Drive was held on Monday, September 27th Our Club won the challenge with 42 donors and retains the "blood drop" trophy by defeating the Howell, and Liv. Sunrise Rotaries!  Thank you to Lori & Chris Lalama, Jane McManus, Bonnie Corrigan, Scott Griffith, Mike Bourke, Pam McConeghy, Michele Bouhana and Jeremy Jones for all of their efforts!

The annual Rotary golf outing was held last Thursday, September 23th at the Majestic. Our Club retained the champion's trophy over the other Livingston County Rotaries.  Thank you to Don Homan for coordinating this fun event and raising $800  for our Rotary Raiders' tool and wood fund!

Jeanne McMillan announced that the organizational meeting for the Good Deed Doers Thanksgiving Dinners will be held next week (10/5) at 1:30pm after our formal meeting.

The Family of Rotary Bonfire with the other Livingston County Clubs is scheduled for Friday, October 8th at 6pm at Tom Archer's House, 736 Fowlerville Rd in Fowlerville.  Contact Tom Archer at 810-333-8160 for more info.

Red Linenkugel Night is scheduled for 10/13 at 5:30pm at Leaf, Barley & Vine.  Julie Blankenship is looking for a few people to speak informally about the Four Avenues of Service.  Hope to see everyone there!

The Howell Rotary's "Tour de Livingston" benefit for the United Way will be held on Sunday, Oct 10th .  Registration begins at 7am and the ride begins at 8am.  Pre-registration cost $25 for an adult and $12 for ages 12 & under.  Ride length options include 10, 28, 38, 62 or 100 mile routes.  Contact www.TourDeLivingston.org or 810-494-3000.

Nancy Johnson reminds members that one way to help combat literacy is to attend the Friends of the Brighton District Library's book sale this week.

Program:

Program Host Beth Walker introduced freelance writer and Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Sheryl James who spoke about her "Life as a Journalist." As a staff writer for the "St Petersburg Times" in Florida, Ms. James created a piece that won the Pulitzer Prize for feature writing in 1991, wrote another piece that was a Pulitzer Prize finalist in 1992, and developed a Pulitzer-winning series that was published in three journalism textbooks.  Ms. James shared details from some memorable interviews that she conducted including those with Gwen Frostic, Joe Montana, Gerald Ford, Michigan-based victims from 9/11, and crew from The Great Eastern, the ship that laid the transatlantic cable.
