The Rotary theme for this year is “”Engage Rotary: Change Lives.” The following Club Members recently affected the lives of others:  Karen & Terry Gill were recognized by Mike McManus for their continued sponsorship of our Rotary Exchange student Matias.  The sendoff party for him was terrific—hats off to Karen & Terry Gill.
The recent Raiders Ramp of last week made a tremendous life change for both the recipient and our workers—great job!
Tom Zizka & Rachel Evers were saluted by George Moses for their weekly efforts to raise funds for our Club via the 50/50 raffle—Thank you!
George Moses was recognized by Melanie Moses for his expert care and concern yesterday after her medical procedure.

Dan Bowen, Ron Cleveland, Deann Donovan, and Beth & Dave Walker were recognized for trash pickup and cleaning efforts along US-23 this weekend.

Rotary Raiders ramp builds on July 10th & 11th were a success! Brian Donovan recognized Mike Archinal, Mike Burke, Mark Marker & Peggi Mintz for their help on Tuesday using the post-hole digger repaired by Brian Parsons.  Nancy B. Johnson supplied the beer and pizza while cleaning the Raider’s trailer, and Dan Bowen came both Wednesday & Thursday and worked like a house-afire.

Piet Lindhout has many project opportunities for Raiders help on the horizon:  signup sheets were circulated for the installation of two replacement doors for a cottage on Lake Chemung owned by an elderly couple; the Imagination Station needs some new toys—chalk boards donated by Mitch Zoldowski need frames and mounting, ceramic drawing tiles need mounting, and the creation of rain sticks from PVC pipe and ball bearings all need Raiders assistance.  Another ramp in Burkhart Ridge mobile home park needs to be built for a women in rehabilitation that cannot return to her home until she has an accessible ramp,  Brighton District Library’s children’s house needs new windows, trim & paint and the United Way Day of Caring will soon be here on August 21st.  Stay tuned and watch your email for additional details.

Program:

Program host Mark Marker introduced Nancy Rosso, Executive Director of the Livingston County United Way.  Nancy has been with the United Way ten years, after serving as Director of Catholic Social Services.  In an overview of the United Way, Nancy spoke about how thirty-six years ago the individual community funds were merged to be the United Way.  It was formerly known as a fundraising organization that helped the community, but ten years ago, the United Way decided to be a “financial broker” and focus on individual agencies and corralling resources to fix problems—the goal is to achieve as much as possible with people working together.  Every dollar earned by our United Way generates over two-dollars back to the community (leveraging is achieved via grants and funds from other state and federal government agencies.  Over fifty-percent of funds went into initiative work, e.g. early childhood education initiatives. Ten years ago, there was a fifty-seven percent hunger gap:  hopefully by next year that percentage will be zero—which means that families that need help will have access to resources to address hunger problems and become self-sufficient again.  Future goals are to help families at risk prevent homelessness, encourage childhood development, and promote community wellness.  Our Club currently has four members on the United Way Board of Directors:  Scott Griffith, Nancy B. Johnson, Piet Lindhout, and Pam McConeghy.

50/50 drawing:  No one won the jackpot, and George Moses, Tom Coates, and George Moses were unable to locate the Ace of Spades.
