How has Rotary changed lives this past week? The Rotary Raiders project this past weekend constructed a ramp at Nancy Powell’s home was very heartwarming and her comment was “WhooHoo!  I’m Free!!!” after spending most of the winter inside because she couldn’t get in and out of her home.  Nancy B. Johnson thanked Bill Anderson and First National Bank of Howell for clearing a problem with the tracking of deposits.  Also Mike McManus was thanked by the entire Club for going home to get some speakers that would work with our AV system for today’s program!.

Ask a Rotarian this week was Pam McConeghy our Past President and current lead of the Greater Brighton Area Chamber of Commerce.  Pam was asked if she had ever received advice or spoke about leading the Chamber with Joyce Rogers, (the former Chamber Director)?  Pam had not spoke with Joyce before her passing about the Chamber and how it has evolved.  Pam at one time taught Tae Kwan Do and trained FBI members in Detroit.  Pam has played the paino since she was young, but didn’t really like lessons.  As an adult, she increased her skills and wonderful ear by playing in a band called “Cornerstone” and becoming active through her church.  Pam moved here from Chicago, when she married a medical student from Michigan and they returned to the State.  (Pam and her former husband were married 17 years).

Katherine Lawrence-Copp reminded members about the No Snow Ball fundraiser Thursday, May 1st from 6:30-9:30pm at Downtown Main Martini Bar.  Tickets are $50 per person and includes admission, the first snow cone, and appetizers. A cash bar will be available along with regular menu items for purchase.  Celebrity servers and singers (Elvis, Bruce Springstein and Patsy Klein) will be appearing…Michele Bouhana and Anne Belser reminded Club members that our membership dues only overs our lunches, the Rotary Magazine and Rotary International dues.  The Club is about $12,000 down in funds, our Raiders are out of funds, and we need all members to complete the Write-A-Check fundraiser and support this FUN-raiser.  Don’t forget to use your Downtown Main Friends Card that donates a portion of your bill to the Rotary Scholarship Fund!

Bill Gartley distributed flyers about Interact’s fundraisers at Chili’s today, April 29th, from 11am-11pm, and on Tuesday, May 6th from 11am-11pm.  They will also be holding a fundraiser at Buffalo Wild Wings on Monday, May 5th.  Please support the Interact Club by dining at one of these restaurants, use the associated flyers, and help contribute 10percent of your dinner bill to be earned by the Interact members.

The Scholarship Committee will meet on Wednesday, 4/30, at Brighton High School from 11:00am-3:00pm to interview candidates for the 2014 Anderson-McGregor Scholarships.  If interested in joining the committee, talk to Beth Walker.

March of Dimes “Walk for Babies” is scheduled for this Sunday, May 4th, at Kensington MetroParks, at the West Boat Launch—be there by 9:30am or see Bill Anderson to volunteer.

Maribeth Regnier will be displaying some of her doll collection with meticulously crafted clothes and accessories at the SELCRA Mother-Daughter Tea Party on May 10th at Miller Intergenerational Center.  Maribeth’s collection includes 120 finished dolls grouped into collections presenting a fashion retrospective about American lives.

Rotary Raiders: Next on the agenda is a ramp build for the Labor of LOVE workday on Saturday, May 3rd—volunteers are needed for construction on Walnut Street in Howell beginning at 8am (or Friday for post installation)—contact Piet Lindhout or Brian Donovan.  May 17th involves landscape help to create a memorial hummingbird garden at the Brighton District Library, and the Livingston County Day of Caring is scheduled for August 20th.

Mike Archinal is gathering names of people interested in running in the Fourth of July Hungry Duck Run sponsored by Livingston Sunrise Rotary.

Program:

Program Host Ron Cleveland introduced Tina Gartley, local photographer, about her recent two-week trip in October, 2013, to Yellowstone National Park and the Grand Tetons.  Set beautiful music with the melody of “A Time For Us,” .Tina managed to cull 18,000 images down to about 200 to share  with our Club.  Her breathtaking photography captured the magical images that reminded us that we are “truly steward of the land.”  Tina has completed corporate work, and is now branching into birth photography, but enjoys many different types of photography from portrait work to freelance projects.  She can be reached at ccgartley@gmail.com
