Welcome back to Ron Cleveland after his vacation in Arizona and Dennis Kalio who has been recovering from a nasty infection.  Glad to see you both!!!

News of Rotarians helping others: Peggi Mintz thanked Jane Schafer for helping in her office while Peggi was on vacation; Mark Marker for assisting with an unusual business transaction this week; and Julie Fessler for handling Rotary Treasurer duties last week.  Brian Parsons thanked Piet Lindhout for inspecting the foundation work for the Chamber of Commerce outside stairs after receiving permission to act as a deputy building inspector.

The next Family of Rotary event at the Island Lake Shooting Range 5-Stand Shooting on Thursday, April 18th at 4pm.  Cost is $8 plus ammunition.  If you don’t have equipment to try this, don’t worry—other Club members can help.  Those that do not want to shoot are encouraged to join the Heckling Gallery.  RSVP by April 12th to Mike Bourke or Jason Conrad Huntley at 810-229-5212.

Raiders Labor of Love April 27th ramp build will be in Stockbridge, near the Liv. County boarder.  Piet circulated a sign-up sheet and is considering building a second ramp on that day to fulfill another request.  The decision will be made based upon the number of volunteers.  Also, each participant /Raider volunteer needs to register at www.LaborofLoveLivingston.com for the Brighton Rotary Team led by Piet Lindhout.

Anderson-McGregor Scholarship applications are due tomorrow, April 10th at the BHS Counseling Office.  Applications will be emailed to committee members this weekend and  a scholarship committee meeting will be held on Tuesday, April 23rd, immediately following the regular meeting to select interview candidates.  Tentative date for candidate interviews is Thursday, 5/2/13, in the afternoon. If you are interested in joining the committee, please contact Beth Walker at BethWWalker@aol.com.

Also from Livingston Sunrise Rotary, Brighton Rotary received “Thank you for providing funding for the Free Tickets to Read.  These are available at libraries and facilities across the county to encourage adults to utilize tutoring to help them read.””
LACASA is presenting The 15th Annual  Clothesline Project, Art as Expression, of t-shirts created by survivors of Sexual Assault and Child Abuse at each of the local libraries.  Contact 517-548-1350 for more information.
The Brighton Art Guild seeks applicants age 17-25 for the Norma Gray Scholarship of $500.  If you know of a promising young artist, please have them complete an application available at www.brightonartguild.com

The Brighton Imagination Station will be the site this Saturday, 4/13, from 9am-12noon, for a cleanup and care effort to keep the playground safe for children users.  If you are interested in helping, contact Lori French at the Brighton City Hall.

The Brighton District Library is holding a capital campaign to purchase 13 new lights for the circular drive.  Each lights costs $1,000 and a bucket was passed to see if we could raise enough funds to purchase one light from our Club to be marked with a plaque recognizing the Brighton Rotary Club.  $119 was raised last week, today’s additional funds totaled $309.

Jane McManus attended the Ann Arbor West Rotary meeting’s program about land conservancy and wanted to help encourage this new Club to gain members and flourish.  They meet in Ann Arbor at the Quarter Bistro near Miller/Maple.  Jane is willing to organize a group of potential new members to attend an upcoming meeting on Thursday nights.

Cathy Riesterer spoke about inbound exchange student Camilla Andreas DelSantos from Brazil who will be arriving in August.  Camilla will be 17 years old, is a ballet dancer, and very excited about staying with the Zimmerman  family and Heather Spitler’s family.  Cathy still seeks outbound exchange students from Brighton—if you know of someone who may be interested, see Cathy.

Rotary Minute:  Jeff Billig spoke about his amazement at all of the things we do at Rotary.  From building a Raiders’ ramp in Okemos, to Thanksgiving Dinners (with which his family loves to  participate), to the fellowship and stories at meetings, our Club keeps his interest and fulfills many community needs.

Program:

Program Host Ed Bottom introduced Mike Archinal, Genoa Township Supervisor, who celebrated his 15th anniversary with the Township this year.  Mike was hired by fellow Rotarian Bob Murray and has watch the township grow to a population of 19,821 within 36 square miles.  Major projects within Genoa Township include:

-242 Church construction and revitalization of the old Brighton Athletic Club site.

-Vail Properties planned upgrades to Mt. Brighton.

-Upgrades to the former Waldecker site (now Champion Chevrolet) off of Hyne Road.

-Canton Interiors new 30o,000 sq ft facility behind Trends in Tile off of Grand River.

-Dorr Road skilled nursing facility with 56,000 sq ft of space near the expressway.

-Improvements to the township hall, including the fire substation, 2 soccer fields, the ski hill at the former Lyle Herbst barn, the playground, soccer practice wall and pavilion, and the wind turbines/solar panels to provide about 25 percent of power needs for the township hall.

-Latson/Grand River expressway interchange will greatly affect traffic flow in the area.

-318 miles of water and sewer pipe in the ground within the township, and

-recycling approximately 105 tons of material each month since the change to the new contractor.
