Announcements:

It was great to see George Moses looking chipper and feeling well after his heart ablation procedure last week!  Melanie Moses reports that she has passed the 25 year recovery milestone from breast cancer!

Jeff Toole reports that grandbaby #9 is due this month, while grandbaby #10 is due in about eight months.

Congratulations to Greg Strouse who won $200 at the Chamber of Commerce "Big Moola Ball" held on March 5th. Our new member, Jennifer Parkyn did a wonderful job organizing this event, and a fun time was had by all

SOLD OUT!!! An Evening with Jeff Daniels concert on 3/19 at 8pm at the Brighton Center for the Performing Arts (BCPA).  Mark Sweatman circulated a volunteer station/location list.  Ushers and Will Call staffers are asked to arrive by 6:45pm.  2 or 3 more student ushers for the balcony are still needed-if you know someone who would be interested in helping, contact Mark.

Nancy Johnson and Pam McConeghy heard Olympic Gold Medalist (and UofM alum) Peter VanderKay speak at the Livingston Economic Club lecture yesterday.  Mr. VanderKay said that a key part of his success originated with his parents and their support throughout his career.  See, all that time will eventually produce dividends!

March is Reading Month, and Literacy Committee Chair Nancy Johnson has a copy of the Great Influenza book available for loan.  If interested, see Nancy.

Pledge cards for the Brighton Rotary Foundation Sustaining Fund Drive are due this week.  See Jeff Toole for more information or for additional pledge cards. The Foundation has set a goal of raising $1,000 per person, payable in ten $100 annual installments.

Mike Bourke reports that Junior Achievement at St. Patrick's School is almost all set to begin.  He is still searching for one more teacher-see Mike if interested.

The Club's celebration of the 75th anniversary of our founding will occur separately from our June President's Night.  Lori Lalama, Jane & Mike McManus will lead the committee planning our festivities and hope to celebrate in conjunction with a downtown Chamber of Commerce event to raise awareness about Rotary.  Please share your thoughts & ideas with Lori, Jane or Mike to help make this a memorable event!

  President Jeremy announced that the Board of Director's will pay the $225 registration fee (includes food) for any Members who decide to attend the upcoming District 6380 conference in Traverse City on April 29-May 1.  Lodging will need to be self-funded.  To register visit www.BrightonRotary.com and access the District 5380 link.

Lori Lalama recognized Dora Lezovich and Bill Gartley for the work that Sylvan Learning Center and the BHS Interact Club in helping to prepare students to excel on the ACT exam.  The ACT practice tests were very helpful and a service to the community.

Program:

President Jeremy introduced Joyce Powers who introduced the  Brighton Area Women's History Roll of Honor.  Today marked the ninth annual celebration of Women's History Month at our Rotary meeting.  Past honorees include Club members Cindy Snyder, Melanie Moses, and Bonnie Corrigan.  The 2010 Honorees are:

  • Pamela Lee Campbell , Brighton Area Schools graduate and four-sport varsity letter winner, 30-year BAS teacher, and award-winning softball coach (28 years as the head coach of the varsity team that compiled a 695 wins, 352 losses, and 3 ties record, in addition to earning a Division I state championship)  Pam was inducted into the Michigan High School Softball Coaches Association's Hall of Fame in 2000, and retired from coaching in 2010. Her certificate was presented by Bonnie Riutta.
  • Elizabeth Williams Walker , Brighton Area Schools graduate, Rotarian, founder of the BCPA's Celebration of Music, a recital and music competition, and an active volunteer with Brighton Area Schools and the community. Her certificate was presented by Peg Siford

 

Progressive 50/50 Drawing :  $280 pot and 46 cards remain.  Bill Anderson drew a King of diamonds, Joyce Powers drew a Ten of diamonds, and Pam McConeghy drew the Queen of diamonds.
