Program:

Program host Steve Smith introduced Tom Harris, who discussed small business marketing in his presentation "What is Online Marketing?" Tom asked, Ïs all this internet, online marketing and social media activity really something that I need to be concerned about?  Tom answered, "Yes, Yes, and Yes!" The phrase New Media refers to the technologies, while the phrase New Marketing refers to what you do with these technologies.  Five things that we should know about New Media Marketing includes

·         Connectiveness/ Relationships/Sphere of Influence has increased with New Media Marketing.  Case in point, when Universal Studies decided to tell people that they were building the Wizarding World of Harry Potter© seven people on staff told their friends via FaceBook, and within three days, 350,000,000 knew about the project.

·         Visibility :  your company has to be seen and exist where everyone else is.  Social media is the "party."

·         Authenticity :  you and they way you represent your company needs to be real-not actors hyping a product with a slick production video.  Remove the word advertising from your vocabulary and plan to tell the truth about your products and self.

·         Transparency :  don't hide yourself or your company.  Put your name and photograph on everything, especially on your business card.  Be personal about who you are and what you believe-don't pretend.

·         KLT   (Know, Like and Trust)  You, as the owner, are more important than your company in terms of how you represent yourself-people need to know, like and trust you!  People do business with people, not with a company.

A book recommendation from Tom is The New Rules of Marketing and PR by David Meerman Scott, second edition
