Memorial Day Service in Shain Park

Please join your fellow Birmingham Rotary Club members on Memorial Day as we present our wreath at the Veteran's Peace Memorial in Shain Park. 
 
Date: Memorial Day, May 27th
Time: Ceremony begins at 10:00 am
Location: Downtown Birmingham in Shain Park 

The Memorial Day service is a wonderful opportunity to show appreciation to military veterans both in our club and beyond.

History of the Veteran's Peace Memorial

November 11, 1952
Dedication and presented by the Birmingham Rotary Club to the students at Seaholm High and the Birmingham City Commission.  Made of white Indiana limestone with a bronze seal of the United States of America.  The reason for the Seaholm site is not known, but legend has it, it was in order to express to the new generation the heritage of military service and the reminder of the services rendered by previous generations.

Dedicated not as a war memorial, but ‘…a peace memorial, dedicated not only to local military heroes, but to civilians as well who have assisted their nation in trying to secure peace throughout the world.’ –Col. Edward Hellier (quoted at the dedication ceremony)
The Charles Edwards Post of the American Legion unveiled it assisted by members of the VFW post.

November 9, 1964
The City Commission was approached by the Charles Edwards Post with a request to relocate the memorial to a site adjacent to the Municipal Building.  The commission tabled the decision at that time pending additional information.

1990's
The Peace Memorial was moved from Seaholm High School to Shain Park, and is currently referred to as the Veteran’s Memorial after Marshall Fredericks' design for the Great Seal of the United States at the Veterans Memorial Building (currently Ford/UAW National Programs Center) in downtown Detroit.
