On June 6 were pleased to hear an update from Becky Martell, coordinator of the WCS Connecting Youth Mentoring Program, this program that's been a long-running focus of our club's efforts and charitable giving. Becky brought with her a mentor, Lindsey Bloxham-Fisher, and her mentee, Ayla Gates. After Becky provided an overview of the program and its positive impact on both students and adults, Lindsey and Ayla spoke about how they enjoy and benefit from their time spent together.
Mentors and mentees can spend their weekly hour together however they want. Many pairs enjoy crafts, bake cookies, play games or just talk. Mentors don't need to prepare anything, just be a trusted adult who is there to listen and have fun. Measured positive results from mentoring include: Improved school attendance, stronger social and communication skills, and higher self-confidence and self-esteem.
Becky noted that 59 pairs participated this year and there is demand for more mentors to volunteer. She would welcome inquiries from anyone who would like to learn more about becoming a mentor.
