What is now called UVM Home Health and Hospice has been serving Vermonters since 1906. On September 23 our speaker was Maya Fehrs, director of development for the organization that serves over 4000 people each year and which became affiliated with UVM seven years ago. The staff of 1000 employees and hundreds of well-trained volunteers provide direct care based on patients' own goals, allowing the involvement of family members and the ability for people to stay in their own homes comfortably and safely. In Colchester they also manage the McClure Miller Respite House, which previously operated in Williston.
Among the many benefits of the services they provide are helping keep people from ending up back in the hospital after being released. Their palliative care helps keep people from needing to turn to assisted living and nursing homes, where there is limited capacity and unfamiliar surroundings.
