During the holidays, households generate more waste than usual. On Dec. 5, Gabriella Stevens, the business outreach coordinator for the Chittenden Solid Waste District (CSWD) shared tips on how to reduce what we use and throw away and how to properly recycle holiday-related materials. Among the things we learned:
- Non-working holiday lights can go into scrap metal recycling -- no need to worry about the plastic coating.
- Batteries are banned from the landfill, but may be recycled at most CSWD drop off centers.
- Not all wrapping paper is recyclable. If coated or made with foil, papers should go into the trash. Uncoated paper and tissue paper can be recycled in the blue bin.
