Bulletin for November 1st, 2018

Better late than never! Guests were our 2 exchange students Anel and Mana and also James Hutton our guest speaker but more about him later.

Lawrence is sending out the announcements ahead of the meeting which is a great help to the scribes. Many thanks Lawrence!!!

Despite that there were few add-ons. A reminder about the Music Festival Grand Concert on November the 17th at the PAC.

Glenn reminded us of The Harbourtown Christmas Concert on the 25th of November. Tickets went on sale today- the 8th- through the PAC and you received an e-mail detailing how to purchase them. Nancy was delighted to re[port that they collected bags of hockey equipment for Northern Communities at the Hometown Hockey event held the previous weekend.

SAA Mae fined Dave Becket for his attire and Terry Sedore for finally showing up!  She quizzed us on Halloween and the winners were asked to pony up" Bryce was very vocal about the fairness of that!

David Roscoe was named Rotarian of the Week.........! He wasn't exactly sure why but was happy to sport the button!.

Happy dollars included Bryce for the Boston Red Sox World series win. The silence in the room was deafening after than announcement. Karmel questioned  why it was called the World Series as only North American teams were in it. Typical lawyer- no gray area. Piece of trivia- it was named after a Chicago paper called the World. My life is complete now that I know that.

Anel had a busy week. It was exchange student weekend in Bolton and they all helped out at the Food Bank sorting cans.  There was a 5K run in the snow and in the evening they trick or treated for donations to the food bank.  Mana wished everyone a Happy Halloween. It was her first and most likely last Halloween and she loved it. Particularly the candy component. She is looking forward to Christmas but feels we start too early! I happen to agree!!! She went to Hibachi for Japanese food and confessed that she had never seen any of it in her home country! No surprise there.

James Hutton our guest speaker talked to us about the Hamilton Forge FC (Football Club for all you sports fans)He is one of the first staff members. The club was founded by Bob Young who sold Red Hat to IBM for a mere 33 million and was looking to spend some of his petty cash..

This is  a new Canadian  league with 7 Teams from across Canada participating. The teams will be in Victoria, Edmonton, Calgary, Winnipeg York Region , Halifax and Hamilton. It will help nurture and develop Canadian players. There are 265 million people playing soccer worldwide. We are the largest country without a league and about 100th in the world for participation. It is the most popular sport among new Canadians.

The 7 teams will play a 84 match season and to date 250 players have come out to try out for a spot.

Each team will field 6 Canadians on the field all the time with the balance being filled in by international players.

It is a fast growing sport in Hamilton among millennials.

James explained their connection to Hamilton but it is best expressed from their website:

Forge FC represents the spirit of Hamilton’s people; celebrating our industrious roots and ambitious future.

Hamilton was built around the steel industry.  Inside the foundries and mills, with each strike of the Hammer, the values that define Hamiltonians were forged: hard work, creativity, ambition.

A resilient community formed, creating a sense of pride in stating: “We’re from the Hammer”.

Today, those same values are championing Hamilton’s ongoing renaissance. Hamiltonians are leading the advancement of industries, old and new, including advanced manufacturing, health sciences, technology, education, arts & culture.

Together, Hamiltonians Forge Ahead.

Tickets will be 20.00 each and will be restricted to 10,000 per game. Their home will be Tim Horton's field and will welcome the Barton Street Battalion fans. If you wish to be a part of the Forge Co-Founders you will be able to purchase up to 8 seasons tickets with your deposit..

Janet thanked John for an informative presentation  and I am sure we will see some of our members in the stands!

Meeting adjourned!
