Bulletin May 25, 2018

Guests – Emma Fitzpatrick, Joseph Brant Hospital Foundation; Ralph Spragg, visiting Rotarian from the Rotary Club of Wiarton; and Abraham our exchange student from Peru.

David Beckett was presented with his 7th Paul Harris Fellowship by Roy Cooper.

Abraham reported that his host family had friends over on Friday night and they had a dinner which he described but it was so good he had 3 portions.  He visited Richard Pass in Toronto on Saturday night and was proud of himself as he came home on the Go train and found his way around Union Station and home. He also described the large portions of desert he ate.  On Monday he went to Canada’s Wonderland where he went on every ride and 7 times on one ride for a “fun filled day”.

Announcements
Eric Anderson talked about the Hosting Dinner at LaSalle Park on June 25th as part of the Rotary Convention. 54 people originally committed to going but they are now 4 short with only 50 people paying their way so far.  Eric requested 4 of our members who are not already committed to step up and participate. Cost is $100 pp. Please consider this request as it will help the Club and the Conference.

Gerry Willard stated that Lakeside is off to a fast start with 110 tickets being sold already and that “we will sell out for sure”.  He therefore asked members to sell Lakeside tickets early to avoid disappointments.

Lawrence asked for support in his walk for fundraising of the Carpenter Hospice. He also mentioned Mae Radford who is also walking in this fundraiser. Donations can also go her way as well.

June 28th is the last meeting for Janet Canavan and the meeting will be a Club Assembly.

Sheila Welham mentioned that the Go Train would be free to Registered Delegates for the Rotary Convention.  More information to follow.
In news you need to know department – Renee Papin is running for Ward 1 Councillor in Burlington as the present incumbent is retiring.

Donation Presentation
A cheque for $40,000 was presented to Emma Fitzpatrick as the 6th installment towards our $300,000 commitment by Bryce Leggatt. Andrew Gaydon acknowledged the members on the fundraising Committees  – Lakeside, Golf and Poinsettias.

Emma reported that 185,000 patients are served annually by Jo Brant Hospital.  These will now be served in the new Michael Lee Chin Tower of the hospital. 75% of the rooms face out towards the lake while the rest face the escarpment. She said that a pleasant view results is quicker healing. She also reported that the “North Tower” which is the original hospital was being renovated with completion expected by early October. As part of the renovations the diagnostics will be expanded by 3 times. Clinics will be expanded with a refresh done to the rest.  She reported that 2 MRI machines and a Tesla machine (no information provided on this) have been purchased.  The new MRI machines is less noisy and provide better imaging than the old ones they now have.

Guest Speaker – Mike Molloy

Mike gave a talk today on a presentation he is preparing for District use and possibly beyond. It addresses the focal point of “what we are doing in Rotary and why are we in it”. He used an analogy that his first job was working on a ship out of Newfoundland.  Each ship finds its way around in the seas by way of a compass. This presentation will be called COMPASS to help Rotarians and prospective Rotarians to know more about what Rotary does, find their way around Rotary and discover why we are involved in Rotary.  Mike plans to have a link in our Club’s website developed on COMPASS in the near future so I will not pre-empt his presentation but only give you a few of the highlights.

COMPASS will provide a learning environment regarding the benefits of Rotary whereby Rotarians interact with the community and leaders of the community; within the Club through club service and interaction with other members in fundraising and other activities such as planting trees; with other Rotary Clubs through District and Rotary International projects and activities where over 1 million people are assisted.  The reasons for joining Rotary will be outlined – volunteer opportunities with a strong brand association and through cohesion of members and through networking. Mike was applauded for taking on this initiative and what he had developed to date by club members present at the meeting.  We look forward to his final product.

Glen Warnica thanked Mike for his presentation.
