Our weekly Rotary gathering commenced before I arrived at 7:15 a.m., so Nancy Penney must have been at her station really early. Thanks Nancy.
Owen kicked it off officially at 7:31 with our members singing an absolutely horrible rendition of our National Anthem. Perhaps we should find out where dear David Dean is? Or Jim can you find those pipes?
Some meeting announcements followed:
The ZONE SUMMIT will be held via zoom. An invite was sent to everyone and Owen asks that we all consider registering and attending at least some of the break-out rooms to hear (and see) about district and international Rotary activities.
It was announced that Polio has been eradicated OFFICIALLY in Africa. This is truly a momentous event. Check out https://www.endpolio.org/ for more news and details.
Jamie Edwards thanked all those who helped with the Liberty For Youth bike ride fund-raiser. While only about 30 bikers registered it seems that around 96 arrived for the morning ride to join Jamie, Sherry, Nancy Penney, and other assorted hooligans on a ride to raise awareness and money for a group we have been supporting as a club for years, https://www.libertyforyouth.org/ .
Anthony Ford-Jones has reported that he is responding well to the chemo-therapy treatments and that the tumor has shrunk by more than ½. We all send Anthony our thoughts and prayers.
Bryce Leggatt is also in everyone’s thoughts as he makes use of our medical system. He is home from the hospital and I am sure would love a card or email.
Joe Chalklin continued to give away money in his weekly 50 / 50 draw, awarding prizes to David Roscoe and Glenn Warnica. Happy dollars were offered for Nadine and Robert Martin on getting a new puppy; Wayne Gowan for having been married (to only one woman, I believe) for 50 years; Mae Radford for having had a wonderful evening at the Anderson’s; Nancy Penney for the great evening of friendship, food and Guinness at the Beckett’s; from Susan Jasper for having the privilege of watching Owen dance to 60’s and 70’s Funk; and Jamie paid $50 for having such a wonderful evening with Glenn and Rose.
Yahel sent us some pictures from Switzerland, keeping us updated on her busy schedule.
Sheila Welham had some great pictures from last week’s bar b que.
Keith Williams, our wonderful treasurer, presented the 2020/2021 budget. It was warmly received (the dues did not go up!) and was passed by the membership. We hope to continue with new and different fundraising events this year as we all continue to adapt. Keith promised that there would be some funds left over at the end of the year for Rene to start his term with.
David Beckett director of Club Services thanked all those who hosted and attended last week’s Bar B Q. The latest results of the Doodle Poll showed that 22 members would like to continue with just Zoom weekly meetings for the next 2 months, 10 would like to get back to weekly meetings as soon as possible, and 15 would like some combination. And Yes, a few members voted for more than one of the boxes. Good to see that some of us are flexible.
Rene Papin stood in for Karmel Sakran to update the club on Youth Services. Although there are no students this year, and possibly not next year, it is important that we keep our contacts open and updated among the students, youth, and educators.
Nila Mohibi is chair of Membership this year and presented her report. We need to find a way to recruit some younger members and Nila plans to launch ways of increasing interest in this area. Corporate memberships, flexible attendance rules, and other ideas were suggested and are being implemented.
Joe Watson is chair of Fundraising and updated us on the Golf Day, Rotary Rides, poinsettia sales, and more. Joe is doing a great job of keeping the funds flowing in…so we have more to donate back out. He promised more ideas to come.
Mae Radford is chair of Community Services. She is continuing with our monthly collection of personal hygiene and cleaning supplies to donate to Wellington Square. The school breakfast programme may return in the spring. Memorial tree planting continues as does our club commitment to the Festival of Lights. Mae had a special thank you to Ron Lambert and Access Storage for their support and help. Rene, Bernie, Leslie and Shawn are all very active with Mae on her committee.
Bruce Maybury, Chair of International Services stated that he is a little stymied this year. The computer lab in Amantani Peru https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amantani needs funds of $45,000 but Peru is currently closed. The MOB Cluster (Milton Oakville Burlington Rotary clubs) is also on hold. Bruce informed us that we have 7 Paul Harris Society members in our club and asked that anyone interested in joining that group contact him directly for details and discussion and maybe a glass of scotch.
Randy Reeve is in charge of Donation requests. Please forward anything directly to him if you come across a needing or exciting cause.
Rene Papin is President Elect and also in charge of Joy and Sorrow. He is sending out birthday cards, anniversary cards, and assorted other wishes to Eric, Nila and other members. Thanks Rene.
Owen thanked us all for being Members…and had a special thanks to his secretary Nancy Penney for all her work. The District 7080 site is a great resource that Owen suggested we all check out.
