Next Door
Your scribes are hardworking souls, challenged to write several hundred words strung together in some sort of relevance and cogency. Our role brings to mind Samuel Johnson’s wry definition of a lexicographer, “ A writer of dictionaries, a harmless drudge.”
You may not have noticed, but a few weeks ago (February 8th) I tried to re-style this bulletin to comply with a vague direction from the club’s Communications Committee. Here’s how your scribes were directed to cover the week’s events:
“WEEKLY NEWSLETTER - NEW FORMAT FEB 2018
1. MEETING TIDBITS-SYNOPSIS
2. REMINDERS
3. ANNOUNCEMENTS
4. COMMITTEES UPDATES/INFO
5. DUTY ROASTER
6. SAVE THE DATE
7. ROTARY POSTERS- EVENTS
8. NON ROTARY EVENTS OF INTEREST”
That was it, a bare bones directive I think you might agree, and difficult to know how and where we’re to glean some of the information without many (more) hours stumbling over the keyboard sorting through stuff.
I quite possibly speak for my fellow harmless drudges when I ask all of you dear readers and especially the Communications Committee’s to help us by supplying grist to the mill.
MEETING TIDBITS-SYNOPSIS
Guests were Keith Williams g/o Joe Watson, Ryan Christopher and Sarah Rudall (both members of Halton Regional Police), Kari Osfolk our selected outbound student (who revealed that she will be spending a year in Taiwan) and of course Abraham.
We met for a sumptuous breakfast at the storefront operation of Next Door (near the Lord Nelson chophouse) instead of at the golf club. Next Door is there to support the underserviced people of the Warwick Court and Surrey lane area . Their mission is to be good neighbours - which they do through an all-fresh food community kitchen dinner on Mondays, teaching sewing skills on Thursday afternoons, a ladies Friday coffee hour on Fridays, and a toonie breakfast on the 4th Saturday of the month.

Next Door also runs a bike maintenance, repair and sales shop called Rolling Horse, which is there to help people get mobile. They serve all peoples, all faiths and all ages and mostly low-income people from the immediate area.
Next Door will be the beneficiary of proceeds of the lottery at this year’s Lakeside a la Carte.
Our semi anonymous Next Door hosts of the day were Angie Creighton, Maria from El Salvador, Debbie the gentle, Deb who runs a pop-up vegetable market, and Chantel in the background.
Your scribe shared the soulful and rather painful news that former member Bill Myles is now a resident of Cama Woodlands (room 124) on Panin Rd. Bill will welcome visitors. As his daughter put it, “ He may have forgotten some of us but please don’t forget about him.”
As if getting to Know Next Door wasn’t enough, our fascinating guest speakers are both members of Halton Regional Police: Ryan Christopher works on credit card fraud uncovering the multitude of ways your cards can be compromised and Sarah Rudall investigates fraud schemes designed to bilk you and corporations.. This is Fraud Prevention Month as you can learn from numerous sources. For example I discovered that you can obtain the Little Black Book of Scams from the Federal Government. Really! Either read it on line or send your credit card info to….. On guard for thee!
After bashing away for the last two hours and laying down 598 hard-won words I’m going to skip over items 2 to 8; REMINDERS through NON-ROTARY EVENTS OF INTEREST. But I’ll just note that you can find the ROASTER at the bottom of the first page of our club website here https://portal.clubrunner.ca/144/Stories/duty-roster-1-1 (or on the top menu under Calendars - ed.)
