My environment around my community.
The Cercado Municipality is one of six Tarija Provinces, which has been divided into four sub-municipalities: San Andrés, Tolomosa, San Mateo and Santa Ana. Cercado Municipality has 8 districts and 66 spread communities; Plan is working in 58 of them.

Taking the topography and rainfall into consideration, the Cercado Municipality has four agro-ecological areas:
Tolomosa high area or high valley basin
Tolomosa valley basin
Santa Ana high area or high valley basin
Santa Ana low valley basin

The estimated population is about 20,834 people from 3,754 families with 20% of temporal migration and 2.2% of permanent migration.

What does my community look like?
The central Cercado valley is located just below the Santa Ana and Sama mountains range. It is between 2,500 and 3,000 meters above sea level. This high area has complex hillsides and mountains, which are furrowed by deep streams and terraces which are suitable for agriculture and shepherding. The low area is located between 1,880 and 2,200 meters above sea level. Vegetation is very diverse because this area has many sites with superficial water formed by germanous plants, ferns and brushes. The topography in this area is complex with terraces, which originated from the lake, mountain, and river dispositions; most of them correspond to semi-desert conditions. Among the vegetation, Churquis, Algarroos, and other brushes can be found.

The weather is warm most of the year. The summers are hot. It can get relatively cold in the winter due to cold windy streams that come from the south. In the high area, the annual average temperature is 13°C and the annual rainfall is 750 mm. In the low area, the annual average temperature is 16°C and the rainfall is 400 mm.

The high area is characterized for having superficial land that is recently formed. This land has water and laminar erosion problems. In the low area, land is better and well formed. This land is originated from lake, river, and mountain depositions.

All family members participate in the main activity that is agricultural farming in this area, whereas animal production plays a secondary role. It is important to mention that potato, pea, wheat, peanut, vegetables and fruit trees are the most cultivated crops. Most of the farming is for self-consumption; they only sell the surplus. The diet of most families is based on corn, potatoes, peas and noodles. They eat meat only when they sacrifice their cows, goats or lambs. In addition, farmers breed different kinds of animals that are used for self-consumption, fieldwork, and as economic reserve.

The community organization is very simple and reduced. Basically, they have agricultural unions, which work as intermediaries between community organizations and institutions that work in the municipality

The road between Tarija and area is the main road that is connected to several secondary roads from the communities. It is 45 km long. During the rainy season, it is difficult to drive on these roads.

Growing up healthy.
About 60% of the population has access to a deficient drinkable-potable water system and 29% of the communities have latrines.

The municipality has five health centers that are not adequately equipped. The resultant is a child mortality ratio of 85:1000.

Houses are built using local materials according to the ecological area. Most of them do not fit minimum living conditions. The Chagas decease is one of the major causes of mortality; Plan is implementing a housing and Chagas decease program.

I Learn for the life.
24 of the communities have educational units. About 33% of these units are in bad conditions and only one has a secondary level.

Communities communicate with each other by radio and some by telephone. Radio stations are also utilized, where people can leave messages.

The activities of your sponsored child and all the children in this area start early in the morning when they wake up or go help their parents in the farm. They go to school, take care of their younger siblings, and tend to the animals. Therefore, they do not have enough time to play. Most of the students have to walk long distances to go to school. Improving the quality of education is one of the medullar Plan programs.

My traditions and culture
The most important festivities are Carnival, Holly Cross, Independence Day and other religious festivities. Most of the population is Catholic. One tradition is a special ceremony that centers on a child's first hair cut. A Child's hair is not cut until age six, where family members and friends cut the child's hair offering gifts and money.

You are most welcome to come and visit.
