Editor Marilyn Bedell/Meeting notes taken by Bruce Pacht (thank!)

A top priority for Rotary is growing and diversifying our membership to make sure we reflect the communities we serve.

We're creating an organization that is more open and inclusive, fair to all, builds goodwill, and benefits our communities. We want people with differing perspectives and ideas who will help Rotary take action to create lasting change in communities around the world

Bedell Classic Golf Tournament
Overview of Tournament
Bruce Bergeron

Please review all the documents sent on Thursday, July 30, 2020.  Now is the time to recruit golfers, sponsor and raffle prizes

Highlights shared at our meeting today:
  1. Committee – Bill Babineau, Dean Cashman, Ed Friedman, Sean Mullholland, Rich Wallace. Thank your TEAM GOLF!  Happy to have additional members.
  2. Golf Team has been trying to understand COVID re: golf.  Golfers as interested in getting out to play; social distancing on the course is possible.
  3. We have SEPTEMBER 17, 2020 reserved at Eastman.  The tournament is SIX WEEKS AWAY!
  4. If possible it will be the traditional format (shotgun) at the moment this still seems possible as it meets state requirements, thought this could change. If shotgun, it will tee off at 11:00 AM; if tee times are required, starts will be spread out.  Rich reported that Eastman may require tee times for a tournament there on September 2; this may affect our plan for shotgun. Stay tuned for updates.
  5. Some of the changes due to Covid-19:  everything outdoors (registration under a tent); after-golf events very limited. Team will work with golf course staff to understand requirements for set up and managing raffle.
  6. Committee has decided that even a smaller raffle would be lots of fun.  We think there are people who would like to donate.  It can be done with social distancing, so we will reach out to donors and sponsors.
  7. Carts:  Some courses are allowing 2 persons per cart; others require 1 per cart.
  8. Food – box lunches are being planned as of now.
  9. No rain date; we go, rain or shine.
  10. Bruce sent an email today with 3 attachments:  (1) brochure for players, sponsors and donors (2) List of all of last year’s teams – identifies who is the contact for that team – we’re asking you to contact everyone on the list.  Last year we had more teams than in quite some time.  Review the list, please. (3) Sponsors and Donors are listed along with the Rotarian who solicited them and what the organization did for us.
  11. Sport Memorabilia Silent Auction – We haven’t talked about it yet.  It would be difficult in the rain, and we make only a couple hundred dollars from this part of the effort.
  12. Eastman’s restaurant is open for inside and outside dining now.  So Player may be able to eat there after the tournament if they want to do this.
  13. Haven’t talked about foursome photos.
  14. Call for volunteers at the Tournament will go out soon.

YOUR TASK...GO THROUGH THE LISTS.  LET TEAM GOLF KNOW RIGHT AWAY IF YOU CANNOT FOLLOW UP WITH RESPONSIBILITIES FROM LAST YEAR.  If you have concerns about contacting a biz because of their economic challenges, let us know – we don’t expect you to ask someone if you are confident that they are not in a position to help out.  Bruce Bergeron does see that some businesses are doing better than you might think and are willing to help out.

You are welcome to contact others – let us know so we can add them to the list.

The committee will divide and contact Rotarians not on this Zoom call to make sure they receive all this information.

Ticknor Trail Trail Project - August 22, 2020
Trail Maintenance

From Ernst Oidtimann

WORK ON TICKNOR TRAIL on AUGUST 22, 2020

Location: Slayton Hill rd; it branches off to the east about half mile south of Mascoma River.

Parking: problematic.  3 cars in line on the actual trail and along Slayton Hill Rd itself.

Bring signs of “ROTARY AT WORK”.

I walked the trail July 22. We will need about 10-15 people.

The first 200 yards are heavily overgrown with weeds so a weedwacker will come in handy.

At 200 yards there is water runoff from the neighboring property where more stepping stones are needed.

At 300 yards 2 trees have fallen across the trail. I suggest that from the larger one, a hemlock, we cut a 12 foot section, flatten one side and move it about 20 yards to bridge another drainage area (easy to move with 2 or 3 straps and cross bars). Maybe do the same with the smaller tree.

From there it is pretty easy going with minor trail improvements. Consider slowing down the current of the intermittent brook alongside the trail with available rocks.

At the large cellar hole there is a lot of Bar Berry, an invasive species, which we might cut down with pruners. This is also the spot where the trail from the cemetery joins.

Enjoy the rest of the trail with a stroll to the top of Townsend Farm and view!

Equipment needed:
gloves, weedwacker(s), chainsaw, bow saw, hearing protectors, pry bar, shovel(s), pruners, ropes/straps, axes, adze.

SHARING HAPPY THOUGHTS OR CONCERNS:

  • Ernst Oidtmann’s father is 104 today except he is deceased.
  • Hank Clarke went to “Lake Pee-Nee-Oh” for an exciting day.
  • Paul Tierney:  Hi wife, Carol, is an incredible worker doing a great job cleaning up all of Paul’s errors over the past 30 years as they prepare their home for sale next summer.
  • John Yacavone: Happy thought for Paul's move to Meriden.  Bruce P and I had lunch the other day and we went to see Paul's lot.  Paul has a logger doing some clearing and then some excavation to see where the ledge is and how the house may be situated.  Town of Plainfield says “no permit until I put concrete in the ground.”  No “intent to cut” permit is required since this is a home lot.
  • Marilyn Bedell: I’ve been asked to be a reader for 10- Rotary International Peace Fellow applications.
  • JoAnn Lemieuz – will pay $5.  Last week she lost internet for 4 days so she has joined a task force for more broadband where she lives.  She went to Maine for her niece’s bridal shower and it was fantastic.  Everyone wore a mask and followed social distancing.
  • Jean Wulpren:  Molly has been crawling for 2-3 months; and now has started walking across the room.  She will soon have a brother.
  • Paul Tierney’s grandkids can get up on all fours but haven’t yet mastered crawling.
  • Bruce Bergeron – He was in Kennebunkport where Laura Bush wore her mask in the coffee shop.  K-port didn’t have even 25% of the people normally seen this time of year.  The weather was great.  Also, his driving habits have resumed.  Last couple of weeks did 2 of drives, soon 4 days coming at Watkins Glen – a big sign of normalcy for me. A different type of ZOOM, ZOOM.
  • Bruce Pacht – His granddaughter has adopted two children and is fostering two children from Burundi.  Instant great-grandparent!
  • Tim Guaraldi’s electrical repairs – He still hasn’t seen a check from the insurance company.  Heater in the garage has been replaced.   He got a $3,000 bill for the generator.  The insurance adjuster has been diligent.  Tim is still working on the personal property list since he was on vacation last week.
  • Steve Whitman – Answered a Tomato question from John Yacavone:  Do you cut the tops to help the fruit ripen at the bottom?  “Good idea,” says Steve.  His cherry tomatoes are producing; big ones not yet.
  • Ernst Oidtmann, granddaughter Luna joined him so he could share her as a happy thought, a sweet girl

  • Garlan Hoskin is providing “Traveler”:  a ’63 Morris Minor, a miniature station wagon from England for Mask Up Upper Valley.  We hope it will be masked for safety at the event.
  • Hank announce that there are two new cases of Covid-19 in Lebanon.  Be safe, wear your mask, keep social distance.

Rotary International News

August, 2020 Take action to create positive change locally and globally
Supporting the Environment
Becomes an Area of Focus

Rotary has a new area of focus — supporting the environment — after a unanimous vote by The Rotary Foundation Trustees and the RI Board of Directors. Rotary has long supported activities that sustain the environment, and in the past five years we have allocated $18 million to such projects through global grants tied to other areas of focus. Adding the environment as a distinct cause formalizes our longtime community-based efforts and will give Rotary members more ways to increase our global impact and expand our reach.

The Foundation is developing the eligibility criteria for grants in this area of focus and will have more information beginning in October. It will start accepting global grant applications focused on the environment on 1 July 2021.

GIVING UPDATES
Why giving to the Annual Fund makes a big impact

Did you know that more than 400,000 people and 35,000 clubs contributed to the Annual Fund in 2018-19? Every one of these vital donations adds up to make a bigger impact through our SHARE system, in which contributions are invested for three years and then split between the World Fund and the District Designated Fund (DDF).

These donations help Rotary clubs promote peace, fight disease, provide clean water and sanitation, save mothers and children, support education, and grow local economies. So these gifts make a difference both close to home and around the globe.
