Stories
District Governor Mike Carrier
DG Mike Carrier
DG Mike Carrier focused his remarks on Rotary Internationals new vision statement and four major priorities. He hoped by the end of his talk we would have a better understanding of the role each club has in enacting each of the priority areas.  He provided a 30,000 foot view of Rotary, and then shared a personal story of how Rotary created change in his life.

Mike reflected on his belief that Rotary International is the premier international service organization that continually works to change and safe lives her at home an around the globe.  Rotary's vision is:

Mike asked us to focus on the words that are capitalized, TOGETHER PEOPLE CREATE CHANGE. It is his belief that our clubs will create positive change in their communities, and in turn, each of us will see change in ourselves. It is the changes we make that add value to our Rotary membership.  He then moved on to Rotary four priority areas.  For Rotary to be successful in this century we need to:
  1. Increase Our Impact.  To be people of action we need to become effective problem solvers. He believes we demonstrated this as we have worked on strategies to eradicate polio.
  2. Expand Our Reach. To be people of action we must inspire others.  Through our work at home and around the globe, we should be able to bring in more members to RI.
  3. Enhance Our Partnerships, To be people of action, we must strive to understand the needs of others.  We are encouraged to create partnerships with like-minded organizations in our communities.  Many hands will make light of the work.  All of the work to eradicate polio wound not have been possible with partnerships with UNCEF, WHO and the CDC. Rotarians must continue to establish effective partnerships to do bigger and more effective projects.
  4. Increase our Ability to Adapt. People of action are inventive and entrepreneurial and resilient. Think of all the changes that have happened in our clubs as a result of Covid-19. We have the ability to change and adapt, and we must continue to reshape Rotary to make it a stronger service organization.
Rotary’s core values represent the guiding principles of the organization’s culture, including what guides members’ priorities and actions within the organization. Values are an increasingly important component in our action planning because they drive the intent and direction of the organization’s leadership. Our core values include fellowship, integrity, diversity, service and leadership.

After reminding us of Rotary's vision, priorities and values, DG Mike shared his personal journey of understanding how clubs can make a difference here at home and around the globe. For Mike he came to understand this on service trip to Nicaragua. His club in New Jersey in partnership with a club in Plattsburg, NY traveled to Nicaragua to see a global grant project they supported to put in 150 latrines in a village.  In the process of doing their tour of the latrine project, they learned of even more projects that were needed in this community, especially helping to complete the construction of two classrooms, and to install new latrines for ones that hadn't been functioning for years at the school. Of note, this was for a school that was named after our founder, Paul Harris. His club committed to do the projects at the school. He knows that as a result of the grants they did in Nicaragua, Rotary is changing and saving lives.

As DG Mike completed his talk, he challenged the Rotary Club of Lebanon to reflect on our hopes and dreams for changing and saving lives in Lebanon. We shouldn't worry about failures, but worry about not doing service that is needed. He assured us that during his term in office, he and the district's leadership team is available to help us succeed. As the James Taylor song lyric goes, Just call out my name, and I'll be there to help your club.

Moorings

We welcomed our District Governor, Mike Carrier to the meeting and helped him get set up for his presentation.  Fortunately, the maintenance team at Harvest Hill was able to reset a tripped circuit breaker so we could have power to have hot food, and power to permit the use of the AV equipment. Between Marilyn Bedell and Cindy Jerome, health checks, verification of vaccine cards and temperatures where taken...and we all could stay at the meeting. There was talk about getting vaccine boosters. We also took time to recognize our veterans.

After DG Mike's talk we had a few announcements

The meeting was adjourned a little after 1 PM.

Kilton Library Children's Collection Book

The book for Mike Carrier is Maria Sibylla Merian: Artist, Scientist, Adventurer by Sarah B. Pomeroy and Jeyaraney Kathirithamby.

Ernst Oidtmann noted that Maria Sibylla Merian was from Holland.

A 2018 Moonbeam Children's Books Gold Award Winner!

In 1660, at the age of thirteen, Maria Sibylla Merian (1647-1717) began her study of butterfly metamorphosis—years before any other scientist published an accurate description of the process. Later, Merian and her daughter ventured thousands of miles from their home in the Netherlands to the rainforests of South America seeking new and amazing insects to observe and illustrate.

Years after her death, Merian’s accurate and beautiful illustrations were used by scientists, including Carl Linnaeus, to classify species, and today her prints and paintings are prized by museums around the world. More than a dozen species of plants and animals are named after Merian.

The first Merian biography written for ages 10 and up, this book will enchant budding scientists and artists alike. Readers will be inspired by Merian’s talent, curiosity, and grit and will be swept up in the story of her life, which was adventurous even by today’s standards.

With its lively text, quotations from Merian’s own study book, and fascinating sidebars on history, art, and science, this volume is an ideal STEAM title for readers of all ages and interests.

  • Happy Dollars, Announcements and Concerns
Hank Clarke was happy to have us host both Mike Carrier and our Assistant Governor John Hockreiter.

Tim Guaraldi thanked John Hockreiter for obtaining permission from the Rotary Club of Hanover so that we can do food drives at the Hanover CoOp on November 27 and December 18.  Due to space limitations, only two people can be at the entry and exit of the CoOp in Hanover to solicit and gather donations.  Tim will be sending out a sign up for these two dates.

Bruce Pacht received his Moderna booster in southern NH.  He had lunch at the Everyday Café. He shared that with the two previous vaccinations he had minimal side effect, but this time he had a bout with atrial fibrillation which has happened in the past. Fortunately, he converted to a normal sinus rhythm without medical intervention.

Bruce Pacht announced that LHS has given us permission to do our Great American Pie Buffet at LHS on April 2, 2021, as long as Covid-19 numbers permit us to gather for this event.

JoAnn Lemieux gave a tribute happy dollar for all the veterans in her life.  Her husband and his son served a captains, and her dad was a WWII veteran.

Marilyn Bedell gave a dollar in memory of her father who served in the South Pacific in WWII.  She was grateful that he had a steady hand, or she may not have been born, as his job was bomb disposal.

Ron Michaud paid tribute to Paul Tierney who he reminded us was a true Vietnam hero.  Paul volunteered to sit with many wounded  soldiers who were dying, and he participated in many grueling medivac missions that included going into North Vietnam to do a rescue.  This work was stressful, and Paul returned home disabled with PTSD, a hidden injury that continues to take a toll on Paul's wellbeing.

Cindy Jerome reflected on her father's service a Chaplain in the European theater during WWII.  He unit helped liberate the concentrations camps, where so many suffered at the hands of their fellow man.

Jim Damren spoke to his father's service in WWII.  He received a purple heart, was a POW.  His father's prison was liberated by Patten's Army.

  • Food Drives at the Hanover CoOp
Tim Guaraldi is organizing food drives at the HANOVER CoOp (Lebanon CoOp is in the middle of construction) on November 27 and December 18, 2021.  Time to be announced.  Sign up Doodle will be sent.  We can only have 2 members at the entry to solicit and receive donations.
  • Listen Holiday Basket Helpers
Update from Angela Nelson (this was sent in a separate email too):

Hello everyone!

Crazy enough it is almost the holidays!  Where HAS this year gone!  Listen has started their holiday basket program again.  Unfortunately due to the COVID variants, they are doing cash donations in order to purchase gift cards to clothing stores and grocery stores again.  Not nearly as much fun as shopping for adorable clothes for everyone, but still fulfills the needs and purpose.

For new members who don't know about this program.  Listen creates holiday baskets for applicants.  Community members/organizations sponsor these families and usually receive wish lists of 5-6 clothing items with sizes and likes for each child (or senior) and then each family is given a $50 gift certificate to a grocery store.  The community members/organizations then would normally shop for these clothing items.  It usually costs about $100 per child.  Last year and now this year the shopping part has been eliminated due to COVID, but the need is just as high, if not higher.

The club itself budgets $450 for this program, but usually we sponsor 6-7 families.  Rotary members, as they wish, donation funds (or had chosen items to shop for) to the charities account and then one big check is written to Listen from the club.  If or how much someone gives is completely up to the member and I am the only one who knows!!!!  Since the funds are going to the charities account, any contribution made is considered a charitable donation for tax purposes.  If you would like to donate there are a few ways.  You can mail a check to PO Box 132, Lebanon, NH 03766  (just put a note in or email me saying it is for Listen) or you can bring a check or cash to a face to face meeting (I should be at the next couple face to face meetings, but if I am not you can give it  to Tim (or whoever may be filling in for him) and I will get it).  If either of these don't work, you can email me and we can work something else out.

If you have any questions please let me know.  Thank you for your help with keeping kids and seniors warm and fed for the holidays!

Rotary International Action Plan

As People of Action, we understand that fulfilling that vision requires a plan.
More than a century ago, we pioneered a new model of service leadership grounded in person-to-person connections. Today, those connections are a network that spans the globe—bridging cultural, linguistic, generational, and geographic barriers—and shares the vision of a better world. As People of Action, we understand that fulfilling that vision requires a plan.
This is Rotary’s Action Plan through 2024: to increase our impact, expand our reach, enhance participant engagement, and increase our ability to adapt.
