Program - January 17, 2019
Here is the News from our Board of Directors:
The plan is to have Club Forums once a month to bring our membership up-to-date on discussions and decisions made at the Board of Director's Meetings.
Michelle Buck and Steve Christy are working to finalize our Committee Structure. The Committee Structure document was circulated so members could review assignments and make changes. The document will be circulated at the next breakfast meeting too. The Goal is to help get all members engaged in the work of the club.
Rotary District 7850's District Conference will be May 3, 4 & 5, 2019 in Sherbrooke Quebec. See info under announcements below. Steve had brochures for the conference. A web link will be added once it is available.
At the District Conference there will be an Interact Symposium. The District Conference. We would like to send three students from Lebanon and three from Mascoma. The District will fund one student from each club and we then would fund the additional 4 students at a cost of $1,600. This is part of the message that went to Rotary Clublubs and Interact Clubs. The funds needed will come from our Charities budget. If you would be interested in helping to fund this expense, talk to Steve Whitman. This should be a unique and international experience for out Interact Club Members.
"Greetings All District 7850 Interact Clubs!
Did you know that we now have 20 Interact Clubs in our district? Each club develops their own projects, but wouldn’t it be great if our Interactors were able to network and exchange ideas with other Interact clubs? Well…
We are excited to announce that we have planned the first-ever District 7850 Interact Symposium to do just that! The goal is to bring as many as three representatives from each Interact Club together as part of the District’s Annual Conference in Sherbrooke.
We’re developing specialized programming for the students that will also offer opportunities for them to join Rotarians for meals and the service project. This will be a great chance for the students to share ideas and become inspired at the same time that they learn a bit about what we, as Rotarians, do.
Charities Funds - Steve reported that our charity funds are limited this year. We raised what we hoped we would raise at the Golf Tournament in May, but funds from the Brewfest were limited. The goal is to work to grow Brewfest, and maintain or improve our fundraising efforts at the Golf Tournament. A third profitable fund raiser is needed. Ideas are welcome, and needed from Club members. If we want to continue to do the things that will benefit our community, we all need to get behind all fundraisers, and volunteer to the extent we are able. See Marion Steiner to volunteer on the Brew Fest Committee; See Bruce Bergeron to volunteer on the Golf Tournament. Save the dates to help at the Golf Tournament (May 23, 2019) and at Brew Fest (August 17, 2019)..MARK YOUR CALENDARS NOW...Even if you can't work of the day of the event, we need your involvement leading ups to the fundraisers. If you have a fund raising idea, talk to Michelle and Steve.
Innovations Function - Paul Tierney will be working to keep us focused on making innovations that will strengthen out Club. He will be looking a variety of Rotary International resources to find us new best practices, and then share them with our various committees. His goal is to help us become a more vibrant club. If you would like to work with him on this task, let him know of your interest.
Charities Grants Committee has been revived to review requests for charitable giving and to then report to the club and the board. Don MacMeekin will lead this from for now till 30 June. Committee members include: Marilyn Bedell, Steve Whitman, Willy Koppenheffer, and Steve Christy. This group will be reviewing and revising our giving guidelines.

Maloney, a member of the Rotary Club of Decatur, Alabama, USA, unveiled the 2019-20 presidential theme, Rotary Connects the World, to incoming district governors at Rotary’s annual training event, the International Assembly, in San Diego, California, USA, on Monday.
“The first emphasis is to grow Rotary — to grow our service, to grow the impact of our projects, but most importantly, to grow our membership so that we can achieve more,” Maloney said.
Maloney believes that connection is at the heart of the Rotary experience.
“(Rotary) allows us to connect with each other, in deep and meaningful ways, across our differences,” Maloney said. “It connects us to people we would never otherwise have met, who are more like us than we ever could have known. It connects us to our communities, to professional opportunities, and to the people who need our help.”
Maloney also called on every Rotary and Rotaract club to identify segments of their community not represented in their club by creating a membership committee with diverse members.
“Through Rotary, we connect to the incredible diversity of humanity on a truly unique footing, forging deep and lasting ties in pursuit of a common goal,” he added. “In this ever more divided world, Rotary connects us all.”
Maloney urged leaders to offer alternative meeting experiences and service opportunities to make it easier for busy professionals and people with many family obligations to serve in leadership roles.
“We need to foster a culture where Rotary does not compete with the family, but rather complements it,” Maloney said. “That means taking real, practical steps to change the existing culture: being realistic in our expectations, considerate in our scheduling, and welcoming of children at Rotary events on every level.”
Maloney said many of the barriers that prevent people from serving as leaders in Rotary are based on expectations that are no longer relevant.
“It is time to adapt, to change our culture, and to convey the message that you can be a great district governor without visiting every club individually, and a great president without doing everything yourself.”
