The Valcour Brewing Company was winner of a 2017 AARCH Preservation Award (Adirondack Architectural Heritage) for restoration and rehabilitation of the 1838 Old Stone Barracks. The Barracks is historically significant as the oldest extant structure on the Plattsburgh Air Force Base, which is itself historically notable as the most longstanding, combat-ready, military installation in the United States.

The Barracks is architecturally significant as a well-preserved example of vernacular Greek Revival period design applied to military function. The Old Stone Barracks was used during the site's various military operations as an Army Post and Air Force Base before the building became vacant in the late 1960s. Despite its vacancy, the Barracks was placed on the National Register
of Historic Places in 1971.

The Plattsburgh Air Force Base closed in 1995 and lack of attention to the site caused significant deterioration to this magnificent building.  Fortunately, Mary Theresa Pearl and her husband, the late Terry Schmaltz, both retired Colonels in the U. S. Army, purchased the property in 2014 with help from the Friends of the Old Stone Barracks.

Today, because Pearl and Schmaltz were committed to protecting the significant architectural and historic features of the Barracks, this is a "must-see" and "must-visit" example of preservation excellence in our region.  The space includes a microbrewery and restaurant, guest rooms for overnight stays, and a large community room on the second floor where our club meets weekly at 12:15pm.

There is handicapped access to the right of the main door, about halfway down the veranda.  The elevator takes you directly to the second floor.
