Harry Hope, a fellow Rotarian from Georgetown presented a project undertaken by the Cambridge Rotary Club to build a school in Tanzania. This project is looking for both club and individual participation, both in funds and volunteers.
Harry Hope, a fellow Rotarian from Georgetown presented a project undertaken by the Cambridge Rotary Club to build a school in Tanzania. This project is looking for both club and individual participation, both in funds and volunteers.
The school will serve the Maasai people, a nomadic tribe that travels from Kenya to Tanzania. During previous trips, these people have shown a remarkable willingness to help themselves and are very appreciative of any help. Originally cattle herders, they now herd goats due to climactic changes. Climate change is just one of the challenges that the Maasai people are facing. Political marginalization, misconceptions, land reform, and competing national economic interests are some of the major challenges these people face.
The project is looking for $25,000 to build the school, and $240 to send a child to school (teacher, books, medical consultation, parent consultation, and one meal per day). They are hoping to find 40 child sponsors.
In October 2013 they are planning on traveling to Tanzania on safari with 21 Rotarians to complete the finishing stages of construction. This trip is open first to clubs contributing a minimum of $2,000 with the first $500 deposit due the end of April. Rotarians are asked to budget for $5,000 in travel expenses (flight, accommodation, food and transportation) plus extra spending money.
