The Steveston Rotary Club (near the Vancouver Airport) began in 2004 with some hard physical work. The club was thereafter chartered because there was a community need.

It wasn't from any desire to get fit, rather from a place of enhancing literacy around the world.

Led by their president Sue Smith, 10 members set out to salvage the text books from the gutted Richmond High School.

The volunteers loaded more than 200 boxes onto a flatbed truck and along with their community partner, The Steveston Harbour Authority, and stored them in their warehouses until needy countries and communities could be identified.

Rotary sees a need and does something about it.
