On hiring immigrants

Kevin McLellan is Project Manager from Toronto Region Immigrant Employment Council, (TRIEC) an NGO sponsored by Federal Government and supported by business and other NGO,s (including our own BBoT.) The purpose is to improve the integration of qualified immigrants into the job market to their advantage and also that of the Canadian economy, business and society generally.
The point was made that demographic changes known to be happening in the next several years will inevitably lead to critical shortages of educated and technically qualified people to drive our businesses and economy. At the same time many highly qualified immigrants are languishing in unproductive jobs outside their area and below their potential. An unacceptable number of immigrants actually leave shortly after coming to Canada.
Through seminars for business, mentoring programs and assisting in matching opportunities with needs, TRIEC seeks to improve on this.
On the whole we were told, Canada is doing a fairly good job but nowhere nearly as good as we need to in order to have the needed qualified people to drive our economy over the next 10 or 20 years.
