LEPROSY UPDATE
On Monday January 30, 2012 the London Declaration on Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) was endorsed by the Gates Foundation, World Bank, US & UK Aid, Doctors without Borders and 13 pharmaceutical companies (GlaxoSmithKline, Pfizer, etc.).
Inspired by the World Health Organization’s 2020 Roadmap, the consortium agreed to sustain and expand programs that ensure the necessary supply of drugs and other interventions to eradicate leprosy, lymphatic filariasis, sleeping sickness and blinding trachoma. The London agreement will involve all endemic countries and the international community to join to provide necessary resources to remove risk factors for NTDs – poverty and exposure, by ensuring access to clean water and basic sanitation, improved living conditions, vector control, health education and stronger health systems in endemic areas.
Sounds like a challenge to Rotary International!!
