Guest speaker
Habitat for Humanity
Our guest speaker, Thomas Fisher, is the Regional VP of Habitat in Brampton/Caledon. He began his career in 2006.
Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit housing organization that mobilizes volunteers and community partners to provide affordable housing and promote homeownership as a means to breaking the cycle of poverty. It was founded on Christian principles and they welcome all people without discrimination to join as they build simple, decent and affordable homes in partnership with low-income families. By owning their own home, families are able to achieve greater stability and improve their overall health while building equity for their future. It takes a community to build a community. The Region of Peel supports financially with funds for each home. The most exciting part is handing over the key and payment is never more than 30% of the family income with zero percent interest for 20 years. The families are selected based on need, ability to afford a payment and they are required to put 500 hours in themselves. Their household income is reviewed every year as income changes, so does their payments.
How can Rotary help? Rotary can sponsor a home and Mr. Fisher’s vision is for the Rotary Club of Brampton and Caledon to come together to raise funds for Humanity. Mr. Fisher thanked the Rotary for everything they have done and continue to do.
