Consul General speaks on terrorism

September 11th has changed the national psyche of all countries says Ghalib Iqbal, Consul General of Pakistan. Mr. Iqbal spoke to the club last Monday.
"This terrorist act shook the world and in Pakistan we are on the front lines."
The Consul General spoke at length about the events leading to 9/11 - the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, the ravages of that war and the Soviet withdrawal, the U.S. support against the Soviets and the rise of the Taliban.
"We joined the international community in its fight against terrorism, even though we were once allies with the Taliban," he said. "Terrorism has no face. We must all work together to fight this evil."
The Consul General says there is still a perception that terrorism is linked to Islam.
"Muslims are not terrorists. We condemn terrorism. Islam does not allow Muslims to hurt someone else. The Koran says God will judge us on the basis of our deeds."
Mr Iqbal urged the silent majority to let the world know "we want peace. We must join hands and work together to stop the evil of terrorism."
He said Rotarians could use their influence around the world to urge peace and an end to terrorism.
