Big Brother is watching us

Big Brothers and Sisters of Peel serves 1,050 families in the Region but there is still a waiting list of 360 children who need a big brother or sister says Stephanie Beaumier, development manager of the organization. She spoke to the club last week.
The organization has 1,800 volunteers and offers a number of different types of programs - Friendship, Couples for kids, Big and Little Buddy, Group Programs and Mentoring in school.
"These relationships can last a life time," Stephanie said. Our own club member Khaled is an example. Khaled's big brother Doug Eland will be best man at his wedding coming up in December.
"All kids need a mentor when they are not getting enough attention at home. And some need access to qualified counselling. We can have a tremendous impact on their lives."
Stephanie says the volunteers come from all walks of life. The screening process involves interviews, reference and police checks. Once approved, candidates are required to take child safety training. "All you need is a desire and the ability to commit time"
Big Brothers and Big Sisters operates on a budget of $1.2 million annually. Forty per cent of its funding comes from the United Way, leaving about $600,000 to be raised by the organization each year.
Stephanie thanked the club for its past support and asked that we help with the Holiday Giving Program.
