Our speaker on August 10, 2026 was Francis Tiangson, Manager for Under The Same Sun, an organization dedicated to improving the lives of people with albinism.
Francis gave an informative presentation on albinism, a rare, inherited genetic condition that results in little or no production of melanin, the pigment that gives colour to the skin, hair and eyes.
He spoke about the importance of raising awareness and challenging the myths and misconceptions surrounding albinism, particularly in parts of Africa. In Tanzania, people with albinism have faced discrimination, persecution and horrific attacks beacause of deeply rooted superstitions and misunderstanding.
Under The Same Sun works to protect and empower people with albinism, with a strong emphasis on education. One of the organization's goals is to see students with albinism graduate and succeed at every level of education, giving them the opportunity to build independent and fulfilling lives.
Francis' presentation was both educational and thought-provoking, reminding us that greater awareness and understanding can help replace fear and discrimination with dignity, acceptance and opportunity.
