R. Brock Godfrey – The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre The Rotary Club of Brampton welcomes R. Brock Godfrey from the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre. Mr. Godfrey is a 29- year Senior volunteer with the group and made 94 presentations in 2016 to a variety of groups. Mr. Godfrey covered a lot of material as it pertains to safety and gave us a lot of information that we should be mindful of. Some of them include: - Do not say “yes” when the phone rings, your voice may be recorded as consent to a purchase
- A padlock and s at the end of https denotes approximately 80% safety
- Be wary of suspicious emails and links
- Do not click to receive anything, this will give the crooks access to your computer
- Update your devices
- Back up your files
- Watch out for booby-trapped ATMs when shopping, crooks often glue fake parts onto or around ATMs in the hope of reading both your card and PIN number
- Do not email your credit card details, sometimes you’ll try to buy that special gift online but your credit card won’t go through.
- Think before you share on Social Media. Oversharing is a bad idea and there is no better time to remind you of this than the party season.
- Upgrade the software on new devices before using them. Between when they were made and when you first use them, the crooks have had time to find new security holes to attack.
Canada is ranked third in the world on data breeches and 10th as a source of these breeches. These are only a few of the many safety tips that Mr. Godfrey shared with us; he will be returning in the Spring to present Passwords and Computer Security. |
