District 7080 held the Interactor Grant Writing Initiative again this year. This is a competition to help youth develop their writing skills focusing on specific writing techniques required to write a grant application. There were amazing submissions and our Club was able to support two Interactor Club Grant Writing Projects through two donations to the chosen charities. Central Peel Secondary School Interactors Three Grade 9 students in Central Peel Secondary School's Interactor Club wrote their Club submission and were awarded $500 for their grant written in support of The Shoe Project. The Shoe Project focuses on immigrant and refugee women. While many female newcomers are professionals in their own countries, they need to improve their communication skills in English to attain their goals in Canada. The Shoe Project is very innovative in that it creates understanding about the immigration experience by letting individuals walk a mile in the shoes of an immigrant or refugee woman. By writing their story in English and then performing it, this helps them gain the English language skills they require. The shoes are a metaphor for the journey and for transformation. Streetsville Secondary School Interactors Streetsville Secondary School's Interactors chose the Pediatric Oncology Group of Ontario (POGO) - Childhood Cancer Care as the charity for their Grant Writing Project. They shared a very moving story about how they picked this charity because of the sudden loss of a classmate to cancer last academic year. Children and their families who are affected by cancer are able to rely on POGO to provide essential programs and services that meet their cancer care needs. The Interactors are developing leadership skills as they plan and implement their projects in the community. The Interact/RYLA Committee is very proud of these Interactors for their hard work on these projects. Well done, Interactors! We look forward to what comes next! |
