On May 27th, 2024 we were thrilled to induct our newest member, Pallavi Sathiskumar. Welcome, Pallavi! We are thrilled to have you join our Club.

 

We also welcomed guest speaker Kandice Henry to speak about her organization, Shining Lighte Youth Charity. The charity's motto is 'Shine your lighte on the world!' Kandice shared the intergenerational work her organization does in the community to educate and empower youth.

 

 

Rotary Youth Leadership Academy (RYLA) 2024 was from Thursday May 2 to Sunday May 5 in-person at the beautiful Ecology Retreat Centre in Orangeville. We welcomed the RYLA youth to our Club on May 27th to share their experiences with this annual leadership retreat. We sponsored youth from the community to attend and participate in the annual Rotary youth retreat at the Centre. The three youth who we sponsored, Naomi, Ben and Lexi shared their RYLA memories, learnings and adventures. The program this year was another grand success! We are very proud of all the youth who attended!

 

 

We had the privilege of sponsoring two students for Y2Y Honouring Indigenous Peoples (HIP) in March 2024. On May 6th 2024, we were excited to host the two students from Central Peel S. S., Christian Dal Dossa and Akshay Gupta, who we sponsored. We really enjoyed hearing about Christian's and Akshay's adventures in B.C., learning about Indigenous culture and practices and discussing ways to build and support reconciliation.

 

 

They used humour in their speech and did a great job presenting the different viewpoints. 

 

It was a fantastic meeting. We had a full house with all the Central Peel S.S. students who were able to attend. We can't wait for their next visit!

 

 

We enjoyed hosting Carine Strong, founder and CEO of Volunteer MBC "Mississauga, Brampton, Caledon" on April 19th, 2024. As we are all dedicated voluneers as Rotarians, Carine's insights about volunteers were very interesting. There are a lot of volunteers in the community who do important work. 

 

Carine shared her personal and professional story and the impact the organization makes in the community. We learned about the volunteers in the community and how important and rewarding volunteering is. 

 

 

The Rotary Club of Brampton was pleased to welcome Richard Mewhinney, Past President of the Newmarket Rotary Club, Rotary District 7070 International Service Chair and Rotary District 7070 Water, Sanitation & Hygiene Chair on April 8th 2024. Richard shared his inspiring story of the health, agriculture and water project in Ongutoi, Uganda where a transformation has taken place.

 

Three key problems Richard described in this community project were the sustainability of the medical centre, the poor local economy and the selection of a crop with the ability to water it sustainably in an environment where the rainy season is not dependable. In this project spanning more than 10 years, they have created a sustainable health centre for a community of 50,000 people, supporting a region with a population of three million. Richard shared this exciting story including the concept and the history of the project. The health care centre and local economy are supported by the Valencia orange agricultural crop and a drip irrigation system. Valencia oranges provide sufficient export value to fund the operations of the medical centre. This project was truly inspiring! Thanks, Richard!

 

 

Our April 15th, 2024 lunch meeting was packed. First, we were thrilled to welcome visiting Youth Exchange Student Sho Takano from Japan. We were delighted to meet him. We also had a cheque presentation of $18,000 to Regeneration. 

 

 

We were honoured to have 7080 District Governor (DG) Brenda Halloran as our guest speaker. She shared a message about Rotary service, success and collaboration. It was a pleasure to hear from our DG.
