Chief Stan Beardy was invited to speak. He has been involved with First Nations Leadership for the past 30 years. He is one of 10 Regional Chiefs that form a nationwide presentation.
Chief Stan wanted Rotary to know how much of an honour it was to be invited to speak and gave thanks to the creator for the gifts we have.
He is from a little village called Muskrat, about 500 miles north of Thunder Bay. His people have been in the village for 7600 years. His people and communities continue to face significant challenges and they need to ensure that their future generations emerge healthier and stronger. A long time ago their children were taken away at birth by Children’s Aid and given up for adoption.
The future has hope that it will bring good for all of us. Treaty number nine was signed in 1905 by a British Crown; those are international documents. The fact that the British Crown signed treaties with us makes it official. Canada as a first nation people will be able to manage our affairs. Lots of people say that they are ancient documents not relevant any more but Canada never had any conflict with them. They never gave up any treaty rights; the problem today is that it’s incomplete business. 20 years ago hardly any of their young people were in higher learning, today many go to university and now understand what their rights are and when they understand, it’s very difficult to keep them down.
We’re all friends, whether north, south, east or west. There is no separation between us. We have common problems, challenges and concerns that we have to face, but we also have common opportunities and we should all work together.

The theme of the meeting is part of the District/RI topics – “Saving Mothers and Children”. Speakers will address this issue. Kindly book this date early – it will be another inspiring time with our fellow Rotarians.
