Youth Exchange

 

On June 15th Johanna shared her international exchange journey with the club members.  Starting in Germany, she introduced her family (one younger sister, and parents).  Then she spoke of her home in Horn-Bad Meinberg, an area with a population of 17,000 in two towns and 14 villages, located in an industrial part of Germany, but still close to forests.  

 

Johanna was warmly welcomed by her first host family, Luisa, Jim and Jessica Mocon – a place which she felt immediately “at home”.   Sightseeing started with the CN Tower, Niagara Falls, CNE and family friends who visited the Mocon’s.  Christmas Day was a very special family time.  Then it was on to Glenn and Linda Williams – who took Johanna to Haliburton, the Science Centre and Aquarium.  Then to the Berry’s who also went to the cottage in Minden twice – once in April to stand on the frozen lake, and then in May to swim!!  Finally Johanna is back at the Mocon’s for a few weeks before leaving on June 27 for the East Trip through part of the Maritimes, Quebec and Ontario.  Canada Day will be in Ottawa –a great occasion to celebrate with other exchange students.  

 

Johanna has taken advantage of many opportunities through Rotary events.  This included the very cold Camp Wanikita (-25C), dog sledding, New York City and UN with Carole Berry, and wonderful youth exchange weekend activities, including the Rotaract Blazing Black and Blue Ball.  She has also engaged well in school activities at Cardinal Leger SS – including the band, lacrosse, curling and tennis.  

After the East Trip, Johanna will be volunteering for the Pan Am Games at the Hersey Centre – and then heading home on July 27th, and almost right away will be back in her hometown high school.

 

Everyone was impressed with Johanna’s exchange – and very happy to hear of her Canadian adventures.
