Counc. Gael Miles spoke with passion about plans to build a new cancer support centre in Brampton called Wellspring Chinguacousy.
Canadian data suggests 41% of men and 38% of women will likely develop some form of cancer in their life. Translated, in Brampton, 180,000 residents could be affected.
Gael says there is little support in the city outside of traditional medical care. Wellsping will provide emotional, psychological, spiritual and informational support that many cancer paytients require.
Already land and a building have been donated. But the organizing group needs to raise nearly $3 million to be able to operate the centre, which is tentatively scheduled to open in 2007.
"We need community support to make this happen. We have come a long way in a year but we need organizations like Rotary to help make this project happen."
