Copyright started in Gutenberg in the early 1400’s. Book printers sought licenses from crown print that protected their livelihood and investment.
What does copyright cover?
- Can’t cover someone else’s work of original expression without permission
- Lasts for a period of time, on expiry it’s free for anyone to use

Life plus 50 yrs; Anonymous, 50 yrs from first publication
- Registration and Notice: In Canada since 1921, registration not required
- Notice is not required but good idea for notice may be a good idea for registration
Big corporations don’t like copyright. What should small businesses do?
- Inventory everything you are using from outside, software, ideas, info etc.
- Consider freedom to operate
- Sign up key employees
- Know who to call when problems arise
