Damage to the cochlea is permanent and can be caused by age. The second most common reason for hearing loss is noise exposure. In speaking with some hearing aid users, they indicate that when they take out their hearing aid, everyone sounds like they are mumbling. Over 500 million people will have hearing loss. Hearing loss is a slow progression and for some people when they think they have hearing loss to the point they get it tested could be as long as 15 years.
