Mark is a member of the Mississauga Rotary Club. Many people have asked what is Rotary and what do we do? We all speak about polio, GSE, Student exchange, hospital donations, camp enterprise and rib fest. What about a hospice program? We need to do things closer to our community to raise the profile of Rotary.
The number of hospice beds allocated is based on the population. In Brampton we require 50 beds; there are only 10 beds in the whole of Peel region. There is no government plan to build.
Mark’s goal is to create residential hospices where needed as agent and consultant in the feasibility, design and building for community groups.
Benefits of building a hospice:
-Bricks and mortar
-Recognizable need
-Starting point for contact with the community
-Hospice will benefit from Rotary governance
-Attracts many, bring in different types of members
-Building could be shared/have meeting in building
-Deals with current issues in health care
-Fundraising
This project would cost about $4.5M. Minimum space required is 10,000 sq.ft. (6-10 beds). Mark encouraged the Rotary Club of Brampton to get involved.
