Sheridan on the move

Dr. Robert Turner, President of Sheridan Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning, provided details of plans for the expansion of the Davis' campus in Brampton at Monday's meeting.
He told members that Sheridan has grown from 400 students in 1967 to 15,000 full-time students today. Some 2,500 people are working for the college.
Sheridan houses the largest art's school in Canada, third largest in the world.
The Davis campus is focused on manufacturing, justice and health and it's the primary skill-based training institute in the country. It has 6,000 full-time students.
Dr. Turner says Sheridan is a mirror of Brampton's growth. Still, he says, there are 400,000 people in Peel who do not have the education they require to do their jobs.
Expansion at Sheridan includes a new gymnasium, funded by students, a Sheridan High School Teacher Education Training Centre, which is a project in partnership with the Region of Peel and the Centre for Advanced Manufacturing Design Technologies, which has significant support from the city of Brampton and the provincial government..
The centre for advanced manufacturing is designed to meet the critical needs in manufacturing, in particular the need for skilled labour, he says.
Sheridan has approached our club for a significant contribution to support the centre.
In his address, Dr. Turner praised the Hon. William Davis for his foresight, as the father of Ontario's college system. "You must be proud of that legacy" he said to the former premier, who was also a guest of the club.
Mr. Davis, in introducing Dr. Turner, said it was "evident our social and economic future depends on what we are prepared to invest in public education."
He said the continued growth of Sheridan had "relevance for this city, the province and the country. Sheridan is the finest college of its kind anywhere in North America."
Mr. Davis encouraged our Rotary club to support the college because it will "make a significant contribution to our city."
