In 1999 Rotary was approached and donated $75,000 to set up the first experiment into homelessness involving the Region of Peel with a 10-bed facility. In 2006, a decision was made for a major expansion at St. Leonard's and Rotary contributed $250,000 to complete the new Rotary Resolve House. John Lomax is extremely proud of what has been accomplished and many thanks to Rotary.
John introduced Rick Brown, who further spoke about homelessness in Peel Region.What we are experiencing now is possibly someone with mental illness, and often in trouble with the law. Five years ago they were introduced to the project Social Purpose, something at the heart of the vision at St. Leonard's.
This program is designed to create opportunities for men and provide self worth and self-esteem. The men start liking themselves again and have something to offer. The mission is to help them out and to give them a little money. They start at about $9/hr and could go up to $12/hr. and there is opportunity for them to grow. The logo was established in 2004, Licence2Clean, which involves snow removal, residential cleaning, grass cutting and landscaping.
Ricks says we recognize that meaningful and productive activity is an essential building block of self-confidence and there is value and purpose in each and every one of our lives. At St. Leonard's we are a business but a social business. The value of Rotary to
strengthen the experience and skills of these men is paramount.
Who do we employ? 91% of men living with mental illness; 54% some form of criminal offence; 54% concurrent disorder; 50% behavioral problems. Rick showed us an example of a man who had a lifestyle of living in a hole to now a man who is contributing again and pointed out that each and everyone has something beautiful to offer.
The greatest investment is to take those individuals who have problems and help them to dream again.
