Rib 'n' Roll 2006
Rib 'n' Roll, will run two days this year on Friday and Saturday May 26 and 27 in Gage Park.
"We have been steadily growing for the past two years and we think the time is right to add a second day. Net proceeds from the event go to the local chapter of the Canadian Cancer Society and we hope to be able to raise even more money for this worthwhile cause," says event chairman Rob van Kessel. Last year Rib 'n' Roll raised $36,000.
The event will be staged in Gage Park on Friday evening from 5 to 10 p.m. and on Saturday from 12 noon to 10 p.m.
"We believe we can attract two different crowds, couples and singles on Friday and families on Saturday. We want to keep Saturday as Family Day and we have geared our entertainment and park activities to families on Saturday," van Kessel said.
There is music on both days, featuring local and area bands. The Kindness Crew, four teenagers dedicated to promoting community service will be in attendance Friday evening along with three bands. On Saturday, there is plenty of activity for children including jumping toys, face painting, balloons and two magic shows. Music is continuous throughout the afternoon and evening. Rotary Rib 'n' Roll uses local ribbers and this year's lineup includes Jake's Boathouse, Louisianna, Montana's, St. Louis and Turtle Jack's.
"We believe in supporting local business, and we get terrific support from local business as well. Our key sponsors are Investors Group, TD Canada Trust, Royal Bank, Justine Blainey Wellness Centre, Cool Beer, The Marketing PAD, The Brampton Guardian, Frito Lay, Lawrences and The City of Brampton. These sponsorships allow us to raise more money for the Canadian Cancer Society and we are extremely grateful for their support."
Rib 'n' Roll grew out of a Blade-a-thon, rollerblading event sponsored by The Rotary Club of Brampton. There is still a rollerblading component from 12 noon to 1:30 p.m. at Gage Park on Saturday.

"The event is growing and we are getting help from other service organizations but we are always looking for volunteers. It's a great opportunity for students who need volunteer time. Information is available on our website on how to get involved," says van Kessel.
We need a lot of volunteers for this year's Rib n Roll. The event is planned over two days May 26 and May 27 and Rob says the club will need considerably manpower to stage what has become Rotary's biggest event. If you are available on either day please let Ken Spreen know.
