Remember our veterans
Posted by Malcolm Slater
The speaker for our Remembrance Day meeting was Warrant Officer Bert Hiscock from the Lorne Scots. Bert has 32 years of service with the Royal Canadian Regiment and he has seen duty in Cyprus, Cambodia and Yugoslavia.
Bert commented that he was in the infantry and was used to shouting! While he was speaking a slideshow about Veterans was showing on the screen.
Remembrance Day this year was special as this year has been designated the Year of the Veterans. We should all understand the past by telling and re-telling the lessons learned during the two World Wars.
Canada played a key role in both World Wars and a number of conflicts since 1945. As an example, 620,000 Canadians (10% of the population) participated in WW1. Sixteen Canadians were awarded the Victoria Cross medal in WW2. 150,000 Canadians landed in Normandy in 1944. Canada was one of 16 nations involved in the Korean War and provided 26,000 troops.
Canada 's armed services have participated in these conflicts as a result of their belief in peace and freedom. Since the end of the Cold War, catastrophes and terrorism have been the areas of Canada's contribution. Defence of Canada is key. Security at home starts with security abroad. Today, Canada is supporting peacekeeping operations in Afghanistan, Bosnia, Sudan and the Golan Heights.
Vimy Ridge defined Canada as a nation. As a result of our previous actions, we are one of the most respected nations in the world. When conflict erupts we are asked to help.
Warrant Officer Hiscock asked us all to show our gratitude to the Veterans by attending a Remembrance Day service this week.
