Our Libraries are in good hands

Our guest speaker was Cathy Matyas, CEO of the Brampton Library. She
gave the most interesting talk about our library system. There are 4
primary locations, and 2 satellite ones. Cyril Clark has just been
renovated and it is the first "LEED" certified library in our system.
(Meeting all the "green" requirements.) The main libraries are open 7
days a week, and they receive about 2.3 million virtual visits /yr. (Up
64% over 2010.)
They also fill requests on line, lend special request books, have a full range of programs for all ages, have a self-direct program for learning new languages, offer support to new Canadians- (settlement workers) and have books and movies available in 22 languages!
They are partnering with the City for the Brampton East Library at Castlemore and Gore, scheduled to open in the fall of 2012, and they will open the Mount Pleasant Branch in September, which is partnered with the Elementary school system! (Replacing a satellite branch.)
They are also involved in negotiations with the City regarding the Central downtown library, libraries being a big draw in a community, and could be included in Phase 2 of the new plans. Phase 3 in 2014 could be the closing of 4 corners library.
Cathy is well able to meet all these challenges!
